Cosmetic Condition of Fan Exit Guide Vanes

This letter documents the acceptability of an uneven surface condition on the erosion coating of fan exit guide vanes (FEGVs) installed on aircraft MSN 8789's engines. The condition is known and occurs during manufacturing when a glass layer applied to the vanes partially peels, affecting the coating. Inspections confirmed the FEGVs met specifications and the condition has no detrimental effects on performance, maintenance, or reliability.

Subject: MSN 8789 – Cosmetic Condition of Fan Exit Guide Vanes

Reference: QLB Items SA.8789-0010 / -0012

Dear Sir,
The purpose of this letter is to document the acceptability of the observed condition on the
coating of several Fan Exit Guide Vanes (FEGV’s) of both engines S/N P771135 and
P771192 installed on the Aircraft MSN 8789

The uneven surface condition of the erosion coating of the Fan Exit Guide Vanes (FEGV's) is
a known cosmetic condition on the PW1100G-JM engine. The FEGV's (Fan Exit Guide
Vanes) have a glass layer on the base material. The purpose of the glass layer is solely to
prevent handling damage during the manufacturing process of the vanes.

The FEGVs are manufactured by press process, and this glass layer may partially peel off
when the FEGVs are taken out from the mold which happens in localized areas The coating
application over this partially peeled off glass layer can result on this aspect similar to
"orange peel" condition.

The FEGV's are subject to individual thorough inspections to make sure that the coating
application meets the blue print requirements, hence all FEGV's installed on MSN 8789
engines are confirmed to be conforming including those showing the afore mentioned coating
condition.

P&W confirm that these conditions are from manufacturing and are all conforming.
These conditions are normal and have no detrimental effect in terms of life, performance,
maintainability or reliability of the FEGV's

Yours sincerely,
Signed for and on behalf of, International Aero Engines LLC
