Blunger and Agitator

A blunger is a machine used in the ceramic industry to mix clay and water to form a slurry. It consists of a tank with blades, knives, or propellers attached to a central shaft that is powered by a motor and spins at 200-500 RPM. Clay and water are added to the tank and mixed to form a slurry, and deflocculants can be added to adjust the fluidity. An agitator is similar but keeps slip in suspension at a slower speed of 10-30 RPM to prevent ingredients from settling over long periods of time.

BLUNGER

A blunger is a machine commonly used in the ceramic industry for mixing slip. Blungers
are often used in the kaolin mining industry as well as tiles industry and all for making slurry.

A blunger usually consists of a round or octagonal tank with a stirrer having blades,
knives, screws or propellers on a central vertical shaft. This shaft is powered by an electric
motor. Clay is added to the water-filled blunger and central shaft is turned at higher speed (200
– 500RPM) to form a slurry, which is also called slip. Deflocculants are added to adjust the
fluidity of the slip.

AGITATOR

An Agitator is a machine mainly used in the ceramic industry to keep the slip in
suspension. Most of the ceramic slurries contain non plastic ingregients in them. And on
keeping then for long duration without any motion, the ingredients in the slip start to settle
down in tank. And once they settle down it need more power to again keep them in previous
condition.

In construction point of view both agitator and agitators are same but blungers work at
high speed where the central shaft turns vigorously and agitators at slow speed. An agitator
usually consists of a round or octagonal tank with a stirrer having paddles on central vertical
shaft. This shaft is powered by an electric motor. The central shaft is turned at slow speed in
the range of 10 – 30RPM depending on the requirements.
