becoming popular across the ASEAN region. We also have premium brands from SBA through

their snackfoods segment such as Thins, Cheezels, CC’s, Kettle and Natural Chip, Co., and

TRAINING OVERVIEW

In school, we only imagine, assume and apply theories as we calculate problems related

to our program. Through On-the-Job Training, student will be given the chance to practice their

field of profession. This will enhance the knowledge and skills of students through actual

application of their program.

Universal Robina Corporation (URC) San Pedro Plant 2 has given me the chance to

experience the working environment in a food industry. As a trainee for 240 hours, this gave

me the chance to gain more knowledge and developed my skills.

During the training, we were only assigned in the Quality Assurance Department

especially in the acceptance laboratory as an apprentice Analyst with the supervision of QA

analysts and QA supervisors. We were supervised by Ma’am Maria Lourdes Parabolis, and

Ma’am Shiela Llarena QA analysts with the supervisors, Engr. Ronniel Mabunga , Ms. Ellanie

Manalo and Engr. Olga Denise Argana.

This on-the-job training has not only given me the chance to gain experience but also a

chance to feel what it is to be “on the job” and be acquainted not only with Quality assurance

department but with other department.

WEEKLY REPORT

Universal Robina Corporation or URC is a well-known food and beverage company

not only in the Philippines but also in the neighboring countries. Universal Robina Corporation

San Pedro Plant 2 is just one their many plants where they can produce their products. In here,

they have the cake line, snacks line and the Swissmiss line. In cake line, the product produced

were Quake and Cream-O cake with different variants. In the snacks line, their products were

Potato Chips, Jagabee fries and Ripples with their different flavors. They produce different

variant in the Swissmiss line.

As an On-the-Job trainee, we became part of the Quality Assurance department. In

order to maintain the good quality of products, Quality assurance department is needed. Their

department test every samples from the raw materials to sample products to packaging

materials. They need to ensure that their products are fit to the standards.

Week 1

During our 1st we undergo orientation on general rules and regulations under the plant by the

quality assurance supervisor Engr. Ronniel Mabunga he discussed the rules and regulations of

plant and some application of chemical engineering on their operation. On the second day we

are issued with GMP uniforms for us to work with proper attire and assigned to different quality

assurance laboratories, I was assigned in the acceptance laboratory which covers all the raw

materials and packaging materials from suppliers. During this week the first task they gave is

to arrange their files and familiarize ourselves to the handbooks that we will use in conducting

experiments. We observe the following test they are conducting. During this week test on

viscosity, pH , and corrugated cartons are the test that we observe.

11
Week 2

On our 2nd week we are ask to fix and clean the old acceptance laboratory for which the

equipment from Rosario plant are stocked we conduct inventory on different laboratory

equipment and verify those equipment if they are calibrated and ready for use. We also unwrap

those VIP samples that are left. During this week we are entrusted to do the testing on viscosity,

pH, and sensory test for packaging materials. Moisture content determination is also

demonstrated by the analyst during this week.

Week 3

This week the snacks line manufacturing potato chips and fries, Confectionary line

making cloud9, and Swiss miss line started their operation. Volume of raw materials like cocoa,

sugar, potatoes, peanuts, glucose, marine fats peaked which made the acceptance laboratory

busy. We conducted pH test, moisture content test, percent Free fatty acid test, aflatoxin test

on those raw materials and on potatoes we determine the percent defects based on a 13kg

sample.

Week 4

This week’s laboratory works are still the same testing on raw materials and packaging

materials. I was also able to roam the stock rooms of different products due to management

demands that quality assurance department should also check the shelf condition of raw

materials and packaging materials. I was also given the opportunity to enter the snacks

production room because I am asked to get palm olein for fry testing.

12
Week 5

During this week two different days the quality assurance department is asked to lead

the exercise during the flag ceremony. Also, during this week the Swiss Miss line and Autobake

line stop their operation due to finished job order and the raw materials delivery are lessen.

There are no cocoa delivery and fresh egg’s frequency of delivery is lessened.

Week 6

This week is our final week as a sign of gratitude I cleaned the cabinets for files and retained

samples. Laboratory test are still the same Potato sensory, pH of fresh egg determination,

sugar’s pH and moisture content, and other usual test and stock room checking. During our last

day we are given the time to pack some goods as we leave the company. Evaluation and

settlement of files is done during the last hour. Send off party is held night before the last day.
