CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
In today’s curriculum the Department of Education (DEPED) release a
law that talks about adding another 2 years for high school which what we
called the Senior High School. In every school that offers senior high school
they also offered strands that suits to the NCAE result of a student. The
Department of education gives 4 academic track that the student choices. The
development, operations, and financial management in the Accountancy,
Business, and Management (ABM) strand. Students who choose this track
may pursue college degrees. The basics of medical, engineering, and applied
industrial technology courses in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics (STEM) strand. Students who choose this track may pursue
college degrees in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering,
Medicine, Industrial Technology, and Science and Math Education. The
fundamental knowledge and skills to pursue a career in people-oriented fields
in the Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) strand. Students who choose
this track may pursue college degrees in Education, Communication Arts,
Psychology, and Sociology-Anthropology. And the last one is Develop
knowledge and skills that will prepare you for your next step in college or in life
with the General Academic Strand. Learn effective communication skills, and
gain knowledge and skills in preparing, conducting, and organizing interactive
symposia, interviews, research, surveys, and recreational events about the
present condition of the country using multimedia as one of the modes for
learning. Students will be ready to pursue any college course they chose to
pursue. In general academic strands tackled the same subjects that offer in
other strand. This strand also the hardest strand among the four strands. The
General Academic Strand students those are the student who still undecided
to choosing their career. The most useful thing when you take the GAS strand
when you finished on this strand you can proceed to any college program but
you may take those subject that you didn’t take when you are in senior high
school, but required particular college as a bridging to assess his/her
preparedness in the field of a study chosen. Student taking up GAS get to
experience what each specialized strand has to offer so this is best suited for
students who are still undecided on which strand to take.
Background of the Study
This research is conducted because there’s a lot of general academic
strands students are still confused in choosing courses in college. Some of the
student who enrolled in general academic strands is those students who still
undecided in what course that they want. We conduct this research because
we want to know how the courses in college can help those Senior High
School students to choose the suit course in their strand especially those
general academic strands students at Kasiglahan Village Senior High School.
Commonly those students that still undecided in choosing their career is that
student taking the course but they didn’t want, they take this because of their
parents. We conduct it also because we want to know more about general
academic strand and the possible bridging courses in college. Since the GAS
strand does not a cater to a specific career you might be option what courses
you may take in college. The benefits on taking gas strand more opportunities
that you can get and open up for you.
Also the researchers conduct this study because some of the alumni
student of general academic strands students are bridging to other courses
that in the other strands belong. We want to know what are their basis in
choosing this course and bridging to other strands. In conducting this research
the researchers need to sure that the grade 12 students at Kasiglahan Village
Senior High school that taking General Academic Strands is sure that they
want to continue their chosen career, and also the researchers need to know
their possible explanation on what are their reason on bridging courses to
other strand because there’s a lot of alumni student at Kasiglahan Village
Senior High School are bridging courses in college , like they bridging in
Engineering , that offer in stem strand , also psychology that offer in HUMSS
strand and this is one of our basis in conducting this research.
Scope and Limitation of the Study
This study will be conduct in Grade 12 General Academic Strand
students, during this school year 2019-2020. The study will focus only on the
students on how they aware of choosing courses in college. The study will
also know and determine how many General Academic Strand students are
aware in their choosing career or making courses, and the student are didn’t
have any idea and didn’t aware in their college courses.
The study will involve the survey form for the G12 General Academic Strand
students to know if they are aware or not which will help the researchers in
gathering information.
Statement of the Problem
This study aimed to determine the awareness of the Grade 12 General
Academic Strand students in Kasiglahan Village Senior High School in
choosing their courses in the college year 2019-2020.
Specifically, it needs to answer the following questions:
1. What should be considered for selecting college courses?
2. What is some preference of the student in choosing a course in college
in terms of:
2.1 Childhood ambition
2.2 Parents/relatives
2.3 Influence of friend
2.4 In-demand job
3. What are the goals to motivate you in choosing a college course?
4. What are the struggles you encountered in choosing that course?
In this study, we know and determine the Grade 12 General Academic Strand
students on how to be aware their self in choosing the course, then we know
the goals and struggles they encounter in making choosing college career.
Hypothesis
There is no significance awareness of Grade 12 General Academic Strand
students at Kasiglahan Village Senior High School in choosing courses in
college.

Feedback
In the input, the researcher needs a preference of the student in
choosing a course in college to be able to get information for this study base
on their childhood ambition, parents or relatives, influence of friend and, in-
demand job. Second, what should be considered for choosing college courses.
In process, The researcher shall conduct a survey questionnaire to the
Grade 11- ICT students wherein it help to find an information that is related to
the research topics and also to respondents. It analyzed all information that
researcher’s data and it will have some statistic calculations that will be used
in the respondents.
And in the output, it shows the result of the study.
Definition of Terms
Awareness - Is the ability to directly know and perceive, to feel, or to be
cognizant of events.
Curriculum - The set of courses and their contents offered by an educational
entity or institution related to a specific learning program.
College - A school for advanced education, especially in a particular
profession or skills.
Grades - A mark that a student is given for their work or for an examination.

Methods of Research
In this chapter, the researcher presents the methodology of research study,
the setting of the study, subject of the study, procedure of the study, sources
of data and statistical treatment
Setting of the Study
Rodriguez, Rizal is a 1st class municipality in
the province of Rizal, Philippines. It was formerly known as and is still
commonly referred to as Montalban. The Municipality of Rodriguez is generally
very rough in topography, its total land area composed of upland areas, hills
and mountain ranges.
This study took place at Kasiglahan Village Senior High School
(KVSHS) during the third week of June in 2019. KVSHS is one of the senior
public high school in municipality of Rodriguez Rizal. It has different courses
that available in this school, the General Academic Strand (GAS),
Accountancy Business (ABM), Information communication technology (ICT),
Humanities and social sciences (HUMMS), and the science technology,
engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Subject of the Study
The participants in this study were the Grade 12 General Academic
Strand students of the said school and were enrolled for the academic year
2019-2020. The researchers decide to choose only
