How to Complete a Listening Journal
You must complete twenty (20) listening journals this semester.
1. For each journal, visit ONE of these sites and choose something
to listen to:
a. www.esl-lab.com
b. www.spotlightenglish.com
c. www.youtube.com/storycorps (advanced)
d. www.ted.com (advanced)
2. Listen and write a summary in the journal.
-Listen and take notes without English subtitle.
-Listen and add more notes with another colored pen with
English subtitle.
-Listen and add notes with another colored pen with
Vietnamese subtitle or after you translated all new words to
you.
3. Activities:
a. Look at the transcript and record 5 vocabulary words, their
meanings, and an example sentence.
b. If there is a quiz, complete the quiz and write your score.
c. Make a gap-fill
i. Copy the transcript and visit this site: tiny.utk.edu/gap
ii. Copy the script into the box.
iii. Click “interactive”, press “submit”.
iv. Listen and fill in the blanks.
v. Write your score in your journal.
4. Finally, complete the “self-assessment” questions.
Grading
Complete – The journal is complete with response, 1 point
activities, and self-assessment.
Response – The response is an opinion, not a summary. 2 points
The response shows effort and thoughtfulness.
Activities – Activities are correctly completed and show 2 points
effort. This include vocabulary and gap-fill.
TOTAL 5 points
5 points per journal x 20 journals = 100 points
