Solution:
Unit of work done by Arvin in 1 day = 1/10
Unit of work done by Ajay in 1 day = 1/15
Amount of work done by both for 5 days = (1/10 + 1/15) × 5 = 5/6
The fraction of work to be done is 1/6th of the total work.
Assume Arvin taken P days to do the remaining job.
1/10 × P = 1/6
⇒ P = 5/3 days
Hence, option 4.
2. Rajesh runs 4 times as fast as Ramesh while going up a moving-up escalator. Rajesh took 64 steps to reach the top while Ramesh
took 40 steps. What is the actual number of steps visible in a stationary escalator?
1) 70 steps
2) 80 steps
3) 60 steps
4) 120 steps
Solution:
Irrespective of what speed a person runs, the distance between the bottom and top of the escalator remains the same.
Let x steps/second be the speed of Ramesh. Hence, speed of Rajesh = 4x steps/second
Let ex steps/second be the speed of the escalator.
Effective of Ramesh = (e + 1)x and effective speed of Rajesh = (e + 4)x
Time taken by Ramesh = 40 steps / x steps/second = (40/x) seconds
Similarly, time for Rajesh = (16/x) seconds
Since distance is constant, sped × time = constant
(4 + e)x × (16/x) = (1 + e)x × (40/x)
∴ 64 + 16e = 40 + 40e
∴e=1
Here, since the distance is calculated in steps, total distance = total steps visible = (4 + 1)(16) = 80 steps
Hence, option 2.
3. After allowing a discount of 60% on a product’s marked price, the businessman earns a profit of 40%. By how much percentage,
the marked price is more than the cost price?
1) 200%
2) 125 %
3) 150%
4) 250%
Solution:
Let the marked price be 100x.
The discounted selling price would be 40x.
The profit after giving 60% discount would be 40% over the cost price.
1.4CP = 40x
CP = 200x/7
(100x – 200x/7)/(200x/7) = 5/2 i.e. 250% more than the cost price.
Hence, option 4.
4. Two trains A and B started at the same time approaching each other with a speed of 120 km/hr and 135 km/hr from point P and
Q respectively. The two trains met 50 km away from Q for the first time. What is the length of the track PQ?
1) 850/9 km
2) 70 km
3) 950/9 km
4) 110/9 km
Solution:
When the two trains meet, time taken by train B = time taken by train A.
5. Bolt and Powell started running from A and B respectively towards each other. After some seconds, they crossed each other. Bolt
and Powell took 28.9 seconds and 10 seconds respectively reach their opposite end. Approximately, after how many seconds did
they cross each other?
1) 7.4
2) 9
3) 5.4
4) 6.8
Solution:
As distance is constant, time is inversely proportional to speed.
Let SP and SB be speeds of Powell and Bolt respectively.
𝑆 28.9
=
𝑆 10
Let SP = 28.9 and SB = 10x.
AB = 289x
The time at which the two meet each other = . = . = 7.4
Hence, option 1.
6. In the beginning of the month, a business man distributes his money among his wife and two daughters in the ratio of 5 : 2 : 3, after
keeping 10% of the total money in savings. Now, his wife, immediately distributes her money among two daughters in the ratio 2 :
3. What is the ratio of savings done by the businessman and the amount with the two daughters together at the end of the month?
1) 2 : 17
2) 1 : 9
3) 1 : 10
4) None of these
Solution:
As his wife immediately distributes her money among the two daughters, whatever the businessman distributes goes to the
daughter. So, daughters together have 90% of the income, and businessman saves 10%.
So, the ratio of the saving of the businessman and the two daughters at the end = 1 : 9.
Hence, option 2.
7. Ajay and Amir work together for 4 days to make a furniture while Amir and Abhay took 6 days together to make the furniture. If
Abhay and Ajay work together then they would take 8 days to make the furniture. Now, if all of them work together to make the
same and got Rs. 3900. What is the share of Ajay?
1) Rs. 2000
2) Rs. 1750
3) Rs. 1500
4) Rs. 2500
Solution:
Let the work done by Ajay in one day = 1/a = a’
Let the work done by Amir in one day = 1/b = b’
Let the work done by Abhay in one day = 1/c = c’
So,
a’ + b’ = ¼ …(1)
b’ + c’ = 1/6 …(2)
c’ + a’ = 1/8 …(3)
Subtract equation (2) from (1), a’ – c’ = 1/12
a’ + c’ = 1/8
Solving the two equations, a’ = 5/48
∴ b’ = 7/48 and c’ = /48
Share of Ajay, Amir and Abhay = 5 : 7 : 1
The share of Ajay would be = (5/13) × 3900 = Rs. 1500
Hence, option 3.
Solution:
Let the work done by a woman and a man are w and m units.
(4m + 6w) × 4x = (4m + 10w) × 3x
4m = 6w
∴ Total work = 48wx
Let the third group take P days to build the wall.
(8m + 12w) × P = 48wx
⇒ P = 2x
The ratio of number of days required to build the wall by the first group and third group = 2 : 1.
Hence, option 1.
9. Container 1 contains Methanol and Ethanol in the ratio of 6 : 7, Container 2 contains Methanol and Ethanol in the ratio 3 : 4. Certain
quantity from both the containers is mixed. If the resultant mixture has 30 liters of Methanol, what are the quantities from container
1 and container 2 are mixed?
1) 13 liters, 42 liters
2) 26 liters, 35 liters
3) 13 liters, 28 liters
4) 26 liters, 42 liters
Solution:
Let x liters from container 1 and y liters from container 2 are mixed.
6 3
𝑥 + 𝑦 = 30
13 7
Substituting values given in the options, fourth option satisfies the equation.
Hence, option 4.
10. A jug contains 100 liters of petrol. 10 liters of petrol is taken by replacing it with diesel. The process is carried in further three
times. What is the amount of diesel at the end of the process (in liters)?
1) 65.61
2) 34.39
3) 62.62
4) 40.13
Solution:
Initial amount of petrol = 100 liters
Amount that is replaced = 10 liters
Number of repetitions = 4
Similarly, this process is carried out three times. Thus, the amount of petrol remains = 100 1 − = 100 = 65.61 liters.
The amount of diesel would be 100 – 65.62 = 34.39 liters.
Hence, option 2.
11. If the average marks obtained by a class of 80 students is 80. A new student joined the class with 100 marks. What is the new
average marks of the class?
1) 6580/81
2) 6500/81
3) 6680/81
4) 7200/81
Solution:
Initially, the total marks of the class would be 80 × 80 = 6400
Now, a new student with 100 marks comes in, thus the total marks obtained by the class becomes 6500.
The new average = 6500/81
Hence, option 2.
Solution:
The average of the boys remaining in the group is to be considered after the eldest boy leaves the group.
Since the average age of the group of 5 boys is (16 - 1) = 15 years, the average age of the group of remaining 4 boys = 15 – 2 = 13
years.
Similarly, the average age of the group of remaining 3 boys = 13 – 2 = 11 years
The average age of the group of remaining 2 boys = 11 – 2 = 9 years
The average age of the group of last 1 boy (i.e. the age of the last boy) = 9 – 2 = 7 years.
Hence, option 1.
13. Two numbers are such that the ratio of the sum of the two numbers, the difference between the squares of the numbers and one
more than product of the two numbers is 1 : 2 : 4. What is the sum of the squares of the two numbers?
Solution:
Let the two numbers be x and y.
∴ =
∴x–y=2
Also, (x2 – y2)/(xy + 1) = 2/4
∴ 2(x + y)/(xy + 1) = ½
Substituting x = y + 2 we get,
y2 – 6y – 7 = 0
∴y=7
∴x=9
Hence the two digits are 7 and 9.
The sum of the squares of two digits is 72 + 92 = 130.
Hence, 130
14. The sum of the present ages of Ramesh and Suresh is thrice the sum of their ages ten years ago. What is the square root of the sum
of the squares of their present ages if the product of their present ages is equal to 112?
Solution:
Let ages of Ramesh and Suresh be x and y respectively.
We know that, the sum of the present ages of Ramesh and Surest is thrice the sum of their ages ten years ago.
∴ x + y = 3(x – 10 + y -10)
∴ x + y = 30 …(1)
Also, the product of their present ages is 112.
∴ xy = 112 …(2)
We know that,
(x + y)2 = x2 + y2 + 2xy
∴ x2 + y2 = (x + y)2 – 2xy
∴ 𝑥 + 𝑦 = (𝑥 + 𝑦) − 2𝑥𝑦
From (1) and (2), we get,
𝑥 + 𝑦 = 30 − (2 × 112) = √900 − 224 = 26
∴ The square root of the sum of the squares of ages of Ramesh and Suresh is equal to 26.
Hence, 26.
15. To reach school on time, a boy ran at 15 km/hr from home. While running at 15 km/hr he burnt 650% more calories than what it
takes to walk to school at 6 km/hr. He can walk a maximum distance of 35 km at 6 km/hr. How much the boy ran if he burnt all his
calories just when he reached the school?
1) 3.67 km
2) 7 km
3) 17.5 km
4) None of these
Solution:
CYGNUS EDUCATE: Visit us at: www.cygnuseducate.com, Contact us at: [email protected] P a g e |4
Let the school is at x km away from his house.
Let’s assume that boy requires K calories of energy to walk 35 km at 6 kmph.
∴ Energy required to walk x km at 6 kmph = Kx/35 calories.
Energy required to run 35 km (at 15 kmph) = 7.5 × Kx/35 calories
It is given that the boy burnt all calories just when he reached the school.
∴ K = (7.5 × Kx)/35
∴ x = 4.67 km
Hence, option 4.
16. The interest obtained in the first two years and first three years on a sum invested, compounded annually, were 1000 and 1900
respectively. What was the rate of interest? (Enter integers only)
Solution:
Let the amount invested be P.
Let the rate of interest be r.
The interest obtained in the first two years on a sum invested, compounded annually, is P × {1 + (r/100)2 - 1} i.e. 1000.
The interest obtained in the first three years on a sum invested, compounded annually, is P × {1 + (r/100)3 - 1} i.e. 1900.
Let r/100 be x.
∴ {(1 + x)2 – 1}/{(1 + x)3 – 1} = 10/19
Solving this equation, we get,
x = ½ or -8/5
As interest rate cannot be negative in this case,
∴ x = r/100 = ½
∴ r = 50%
Hence, 50
17. A shopkeeper sells 50 kg of rice at its cost price, but he uses a weight of 900 gm for the 1 kg weight. What is the total profit made
by shopkeeper on selling 50 kg if 7 kg of rice, as weighed by the shopkeeper, costs a customer Rs. 112?
1) Rs. 60
2) Rs. 45
3) Rs. 80
4) Rs. 100
Solution:
7 kg of rice is sold at Rs. 112.
1 kg of rice is sold at (112/7) = Rs. 16
100 gm of rice is sold at = (16/10) = Rs. 1.6
As the shopkeeper sells only 900 gm instead of 1 kg, the selling price of 100 gm is his profit.
∴ On 1 kg of rice the shopkeeper gets a profit of Rs. 1.6
∴ One selling 50 kg of rice the shopkeeper will get a pro it of 1.6 × 50 = Rs. 80
Hence, option 3.
