ORAL PRESENTATION

WHAT IT IS
Amazon is an american Company of electronic commerce with headquaters in Seattle.
It was one of the biggest companies selling goods through Internet.
Since June of 2010 Amazon logo has presented a curved arrow in the form of a smile that leads
from A to Z because it contains all products from A to Z, and this is their company motto.
HISTORY
In Aphril 1994, Jeff Bezos left his job as vice president of D. E. Shaw & Co, a Wall Street firm and
moved to Seatle where he started working on a business plan.
Months later, in July, Jeff Bezos created the company Cadabra, and a year later after a lawyer
confused Cadabra with corps, he changed the name to Amazon.
After reading a report about the future of the Internet, Bezos created a list of 20 products that
could be marketed online, and then reduced to the 5 most promising products: CD, computers and
programs, videos and books.
Finally, because of the world demand for literature, he decided that his business would sell books
online. Low prices for books, along with the large number of titles available were the reasons for
their success.
In the first two months of business Amazon got to sell to United States and more than 45 countries
with sales of up to$20.000 for week. And in May of 1997, Amazon began its public stock offering
trading under the symbol AMZN of NASDAQ at price of $18 per share.
Amazon´s initial business plan was unusual, Bezos didn´t expect to get profits from 4 or 5 years,
this “slow” growth caused shareholders complain about the company and of not achieve
profitability enough or even surviving in the long run. However, Amazon obtained its first profit in
the fourthquarter of 2001: 5 million dollars, with incomes exceeding billion dollars, this showed
that Bezos unconventional business model could succeed.

FUN FACTS

Bezos selected you company name by looking at the dictionary. He chose the name, AMAZON,
because the Amazon was an exotic and different place as he planned his shop, because the
amazon river was the largest river in the world and planned to turn its store into the world’s
largest.

Barnes &Noble sued Amazon in May of 1997 alleging that Amazon´s claim to be “the world´s
largest bookstore” was false because it´s not a bookstore but a book agent.

Since 2018 amazon.com ranks eighth in the Fortune 500 ranking of America´s largest corporations
for total incomes.
