Tutorial DesignBuilder

This document provides a tutorial on using DesignBuilder software to simulate whole building energy performance. It begins with an introduction to EnergyPlus and DesignBuilder. It then presents examples of architectural projects that have used EnergyPlus and DesignBuilder for simulation. The remainder of the document consists of step-by-step tutorials for setting up and running simulations of a naturally ventilated building and an air conditioned building using fan coil units.

Outline Workshop
• Introduction; EnergyPlus + DesignBuilder
• Architectural Projects employing Eplus & DB
• Tutorials;
• A) naturally ventilated building
• B) air conditioned building (FCU)
• C) Personal Case Studies (after break..)
Building Performance Simulation
• A buildings is a complex thermodynamic object that
accommodates constantly changing energy flows between
the different thermal zones within the building and the
outside.
• The two main components of the building energy simulation
model are the building fabric and content (walls, floors,
ceilings, occupants and equipment) and the plant
components (HAVC equipment and other environmental
control systems).
• Due to the complexity of a building model, computer
simulations can analyze the effects of different ECMs
(Energy Conservation Measures) and their complex
interactions more efficiently, comprehensively and
accurately that any other available method

Introduction: EnergyPlus (1)
• EnergyPlus is the U.S. Departments of Energy’s 3rd
generation dynamic building energy simulation
engine for modeling building, heating, cooling,
lighting, ventilating and other energy flows.
• The program was developed during the nineties
and is an amalgamation of the BLAST and DOE-2
simulation engines. Apart from energy use, the
program can be used for load calculations and to
model natural ventilation, photovoltaic systems,
thermal comfort, water use, green roofs and other
ECMs.

Introduction: EnergyPlus (2)
• It is a ‘Qualified Computer Software’ for
Calculating Energy Savings for Purposes of the
Energy-Efficient Commercial Building Tax Deduction
under Internal Revenue Code §179D
• Expert users can get access to the source code
allowing for third-party validation which adds to
the software’s credibility and long term reliability.
• EnergyPlus has been validated under the
comparative Standard Method of Test for the
Evaluation of Building Energy Analysis Computer
Programs BESTEST/ASHARE STD 140.
List of approved LEED software
(Bold indicates it is mentioned within the LEEDonline v3 EAp2
forms)

• DOE2
• eQUEST
• Visual DOE
• EnergyPlus
• EnergyPro
• HAP (Carrier HAP)
• TRACE 700 (Trane TRACE)
• OTHER (see requirements of Appendix G, Section G2)
• BLAST (not mentioned within the LEED form, but listed in 90.1 section

• IES (Integrated environmental solutions, listed in LEED Advanced energy
modeling)
Introduction: DesignBuilder
• We chose DesignBuilder the tool for this tutorial as we
found it to be a mature product which offers flexible
geometry input and extensive material libraries and
load profiles.
• EnergyPlus is integrated within DesignBuilder’s
environment which allows you to carry out complete
simulations without leaving the interface.
• Simulation results can be effectively displayed and
analyzed. simulation data in a comprehensive manner.
• DesignBuilder has quality control procedures which
assure the accuracy of the results in comparison the
stand-alone EnergyPlus engine. e.g. As EnergyPlus, it
has been tested under the comparative Standard
Method BESTEST/ASHARE STD 140.

What to get?
• For NV; heat behavior, thermal comfort, ACH
(air quality), energy efficiency
• For HVAC; most importantly… system
SIZING!, thermal comfort (usually assured),
fresh air (ensures quality too…), energy
efficiency (aside from optimizing energy, you
may actually design your own HVAC!)
• Parametric designs are also possible!
Practice
• Depending on your own case, build your simplified
DB model.
• Sets up the parameters (location, weather data,
activity, construction, openings, and lightings)
• Simulate naturally ventilated and air conditioned
scenarios according to your existed case!
• Optimize your design and propose the better ones!
