Electromagnetic Exercises

This document contains exercises related to photon energies, the photoelectric effect, and photon momentum. It asks the reader to: 1) Rank different types of electromagnetic radiation by photon energy. 2) Calculate the number of photons absorbed by a sphere illuminated by a sodium vapor lamp. 3) Determine the maximum kinetic energy of photoelectrons ejected from sodium metal illuminated with light of a given wavelength.

Chapter 38

Exercises
● Rank the following radiations according to their associated
photon energies, greatest first. (a) Yellow light from a
sodium vapor lamp, (b) a gamma ray emmited by a
radioactive nucleus, (c) a radio wave emitted by an
antenna of a commercial radio station, (d) a microwave
beam emitted by airport traffic control radar.
● A sodium vapor lamp is placed at the center of
a large sphere that absorbs all the light
reaching it. The rate at which the lamp emits
energy is 100-W, assume that the emission is
entirely at a wavelength of 590-nm. How many
photons are absorbed by the sphere per
second?
● A sodium surface is illuminated with light having
a wavelength of 300-nm, the work function for
sodium metal is 2.46-eV.
– What is the maximum kinetic energy of the ejected
photoelectrons
– Find the cutoff wavelength for sodium.
Assignment 1
(due date 05-08-2015)

● Lithium, beryllium, and mercury have work

functions of 2.30-eV, 3.90-eV, and 4.50-eV,
respectively. Light with a wavelength of 400-nm
is incident on each of these metals.
– (a) Determine which of these metals exhibit the
photoelectric effect for this incident light. Explain
your reasoning.
– (b) Find the maximum kinetic energy for the
photoelectrons in each case.
Photons have momentum
1. What (a) Frequency, (b) photon energy, and
(c) photon momentum magnitude (in keV/c) are
associated with x rays having wavelength of
35.0 pm?
2. Light of wavelength 2.40 pm is directed onto
a target containing free electrons.
(a) Find the wavelength of light scattered at 30º
from the incident direction.
(b) Do the same as in (a) above, for scattering
angle of 120º
3. What is the maximum wavelength shift for a
Compton collision between a photon and a free
proton?
