 No "odd lot" problem: even one share can be sold

 Change in address recorded with a Depository participant (DP) gets registered with all
companies in which investor holds securities eliminating the need to correspond with
each of them separately.
 Transmission of securities is done by DP, eliminating the need for notifying
companies.

 Automatic credit into demat account for shares arising out of bonus/split,
consolidation/merger, etc.

 A single demat account can hold investments in both equity and debt instruments.

 Traders can work from anywhere (e.g. even from home).

 Benefit to the company :-

The depository system helps in reducing the cost of new issues due to lower printing and
distribution costs. It increases the efficiency of the registrars and transfer agents and the
secretarial department of a company. It provides better facilities for communication and
timely service to shareholders and investors.

 Benefit to the investor:-

The depository system reduces risks involved in holding physical certificates, e.g., loss,
theft, mutilation, forgery, etc. It ensures transfer settlements and reduces delay in
registration of shares. It ensures faster communication to investors. It helps avoid bad
delivery problems due to signature differences, etc. It ensures faster payment on sale of
shares. No stamp duty is paid on transfer of shares. It provides more acceptability and
liquidity of securities.
 Benefits to brokers:-

It reduces risks of delayed settlement. It ensures greater profit due to increase in volume
of trading. It eliminates chances of forgery or bad delivery. It increases overall trading
and profitability. It increases confidence in their investors.

 Disadvantages of Demat:-

 Trading in securities may become uncontrolled in case of dematerialized securities.

 It is incumbent upon the capital market regulator to keep a close watch on the trading
in dematerialized securities and see to it that trading does not act as a detriment to
investors.

 For dematerialized securities, the role of key market players such as stock-brokers
needs to be supervised as they have the capability of manipulating the market.

 Multiple regulatory frameworks have to be conformed to, including the Depositories

Act, Regulations and the various Bye-Laws of various depositories.

 Agreements are entered at various levels in the process of dematerialization. These

may cause worries to the investor desirous of simplicity.

 There is no provision to close a demat account, which is having illiquid shares. The
investor cannot close the account and he and his successors have to go on paying the
charges to the participant, like annual folio charges etc...

 After liquidating the holdings, many Indian investors don't close their dp account.
They are unaware that DPs charge even on dormant accounts.
 Identification of problem:-

1. Trading in securities may become uncontrolled in case of dematerialized securities.

2. It is compulsory for the capital market regulator to keep a close watch on the trading in
dematerialized securities and to check that trading does not act as a detriment to investors.

3. The role of key market players in case of dematerialized securities, such as stock-brokers,
needs to be supervised as they have the capability of manipulating the market.

4. Multiple regulatory frameworks have to be followed, including the Depositories Act,

Regulations and the various By-Laws of various depositories.

5. Additionally, agreements are entered at various levels in the process of dematerialization.

Investors may find the process complicated.

 Need of study:-

 To analyse Investors Awareness & Preference regarding demat account

 To analyse Investors where invest.

 To analyse Investors risk capability.

LITERATURE
REVIEW
CHAPTER 2
Literature review

 Dr. R. Ganapati and Dr. T. Ramasamy (2007) stated that a stock exchange is an
organization which provides a market place for trading shares, where investors may
buy and sell shares. Only members of the stock exchange can perform the functioning
of buying and selling of shares or stocks. He suggested that share brokers can collect
minimum charge for opening an demat account. It can help the customers to open the
account within 2 – 4 days. It will increase the customers’ confidence level to invest a
sizeable amount in the share market.

 Dr. Dhiraj Jain and Preksha Mehta (2012) in their study of the awareness about the
services offered by the depository participant. The research was based on the main
economic approach. The level of awareness about closing and termination of demat
account was also moderate. The objective of the study is to examine the investor’s
opinion regarding charges on various services offered by the depository participants.

 Inderbir Kaur (2013), the objective of the study is to know the reasons for investors’
preference between remat and demat and to know the satisfaction level of depository
participants. In this quantitative technique, percentage method has been used. Overall
the depository is convenient and safer and majority of people are shifting towards
dematerialization as compared to the past history and study.

 Dr. Romi Sainy (2016), the study has used factor analysis to categorize the major
influences of investment decisions of the stock brokers. A self-developed
questionnaire was used for the purpose of the study. The five point likert scale which
comprised of 40 items. The results suggests that economic environment, GDP and
government policies, foreign trade and investments etc., are major factors affecting
stock prices.
 Chaudhary & Malik (2011) in their paper “Depository system in India: An appraisal”
states that majority of the participants are resided with NSDL with stake of 55
percent. Thus, it acts as the primary organization with the majority of participants in
the system. Further the paper analysis concludes that the respondents have no clear &
crisp idea regarding the services offered by the DPs to their clients. In order to
overcome geographical & time barriers formal & informal communication need to be
developed. The majority of respondents were comfortable with the prevailing fee
structure of depository which shows the existing fee structure followed by NSDL is
benevolent.

 Gunjan Munjal and Anuj Nohria (2016) in there paper found that majority of the
respondents are not aware about demat account and share market.

 Ramesh Onkareppa Olekar (2013) found that stock market in India has been emerged
as a significant financial intermediary, Efficiently Resources Allocation, Providing
strong support to Indian economy and help Investors to realize the benefits of stock
market investing.

 Inderbir kaur (2013) they found that respondents feel that dematerialization provides
enough services and it’s convenient to use.

 Jasbir Singh (2012) found that present study was undertaken with objectives to study
the investment criteria of different personnel and awareness among customers about
Demat account. If the people those who are trading but don’t have enough knowledge
about the facilities or services available, they take. Awareness of the Demat A/c and
efforts which were made for improvement of Demat Account.
 Olekar & Talwar (2013) in their paper “Online trading & DEMAT account in India
some issues” observed that the banks normally levy a lower service charges compared
to other depository participants. He also found that when the numbers of users are
more online, the speed of transactions is affected.
 Research Gap:-

Research has taken more than 10 literature reviews for study purpose. Under the
majority of people are not aware about demat account and those know about demat
account they have issue of charges of brokerage company’s and also they fear about
share market.
