ASME B16.34

4. DESIGN FEATURES
4.1 Seat Sealing Feature
- Upstream Seat: Differential pressure acting on both sides of seat pushes the seat tightly
against ball surface, creating a positive seal.
- Downstream seat: When the body cavity pressure is lower than the downstream
pressure, the net pressure difference pushes the downstream seat, creating a positive
seal.

4.2 Self-relieving Seat (Standard)

- Body cavity pressure will automatically relieve when it exceeds seat spring preloaded
force, making differential pressure to push the downstream seat away from the ball.
- Self-relieving seats are supplied as a standard feature. Double piston or combination
seats (self-relieving & double piston) can be supplied upon request.

4.3 Double Block and Bleed (DBB)

- All valves are designed to seal through both seats at the same time and allow bleeding
of the entrapped cavity pressure (DBB) with the ball in the closed position.
- Upstream and downstream fluid pressure as well as in the body cavity pushes the seat
ring towards the ball. These built up pressure in the body cavity shall be relieved by a
relief valve provided at the vent and drain positions.

4.4 Anti-blowout Stem

- Stem is retained by the gland to ensure that the cavity pressure shall not blowout the
stem while the adaptor plate is removed for maintenance purpose.

4.5 Anti-Static Device

- Anti-static device ensure that the electrical conductance continuity between all the
metallic components is guaranteed, to prevent possible risk of fire and explosion.

4.6 Emergency Sealant Injection

- For 6” full bore and larger trunnion mounted ball valve, special sealant injection fittings
are provided for emergency sealing.

4.7 Fire Safe Design

- External Leakage prevention: A combination of O-ring and graphite on body to closure
joint, body to gland joint and stem to gland joint prevents external leakage. When O-
rings are damaged due to fire body gasket, gland gasket and stem packing provides
sealing and prevents external leakage.

4.8 Stem Sealing

- Two O-rings and graphite ensures the stem seal. The stem packing shall be replaced
while the valve is under pressure and with the ball in any position. Before replacing the

packing, ensure that the pressure entrapped between upper O-ring and graphite gasket
is released through the emergency stem sealing hole.
- The O-rings shall be replaced when the valve is in fully open or fully closed position by
removing stem housing. Ensure that the body cavity pressure is released before
replacing the O-rings.

4.9 Independent Ball and Stem

- The ball and stem are independent to minimize the effect of the side thrust generated
by the pressure acting on the ball.

5. INSPECTION and TESTING

Pressure Test : API 6D / API 598
Fire Safe Test : API 607 / API 6FA
Fugitive Emission Test : API 622

TESTINGS for VALIDATION

Following are the testing shall be done for validation purpose on Trunnion Mounted Ball
Valve (TMBV):

1. HYDROSTATIC SHELL AND SEAT TEST

Hydrostatic testing shall be performed at pressures as mentioned in the general
arrangement drawings.

2. LOW-PRESSURE GAS SEAT TEST

The low pressure seat test specified in general arrangement drawings shall be performed
using air or nitrogen as the test medium.

3. HIGH-PRESSURE GAS TEST

The high-pressure gas testing shall be performed after hydrostatic shell testing; it includes
seat testing and shell testing.

Seat Testing
The high-pressure seat test shall be performed using an inert gas as the test medium.

Shell Testing
The high-pressure shell test shall be performed using an inert gas as the test medium.

4. ANTI-STATIC TEST
The electrical resistance between the ball and the body shall be measured using a direct-
current power source not exceeding 12 V. The resistance shall be measured on dry valves
before pressure testing and shall not exceed 10 Ω.

5. TORQUE TEST
The maximum torque required to operate the ball valves shall be measured at the design
pressure specified in the general arrangement drawings for the following valve operations:
 Open to closed with the bore pressurized and the cavity at atmospheric pressure
 Closed to open with both sides of the ball pressurized and the cavity at atmospheric
pressure
 Closed to open with one side of the ball pressurized and the cavity at atmospheric
pressure
 As above, but with the other side of the ball pressurized

Torque testing shall be performed following hydrostatic shell testing and prior to low-
pressure gas seat testing.

6. DRIVE TRAIN STRENGTH TEST

The test torque shall be twice the predicted break-away torque.
The test torque shall be applied with the ball blocked for a minimum time of 1 min.

7. CAVITY RELIEF TEST

The cavity relief testing shall be performed under the following procedures:
 Fill the valve in the half-open position with water
 Close the valve and allow water to overflow from the test connection at each end of
the valve
 Apply pressure to the valve cavity until one seat relieves the cavity pressure into the
valve end
 For valve types with second-seat relief, continue to increase the pressure to the
cavity until the second seat relieves

Failure to relieve at a pressure less than 1.33 times the valve pressure rating shall be cause
for rejection.

8. DOUBLE BLOCK AND BLEED (DBB) TEST

With the valve half-open, the valve and its cavity shall be completely filled with test fluid.
The valve shall then be closed and the valve body vent valve opened to allow excess test
fluid to overflow from the valve-cavity test connection. The test pressure shall be applied
simultaneously from both valve ends.

Seat tightness shall be monitored via overflow through the valve cavity connection.

9. FIRE SAFE TEST

Fire safe testing is performed on New Product Development (NPD) of Trunnion Mounted
Ball Valve (TMBV), as specified in the general arrangement drawings.
Fire Safe testing with flame temperatures up to 980 degree Centigrade and metal
temperatures over 750 deg Centigrade can be achieved in house fire test facility.

10. FUGITIVE EMISSION TEST

Fugitive emission testing shall be performed using methane or helium to meet the
requirements given in the standards, such as API 622.

11. OTHER FUNCTIONAL TESTING

All the other functional testing specified in the customer data sheet also shall be carried out
on the specific valves, if those requirements falls under the design specifications given
above.
