The document discusses the different types of bandsaws and their uses, parts of a bandsaw machine, and safety precautions when operating a bandsaw.

The main types of bandsaws discussed are horizontal and vertical bandsaws.

Some of the main parts of a bandsaw machine mentioned are the blade, wheels, guards, table, guide post and miter gauge.

Bandsaw - a saw with a long, sharp blade consisting of a continuous band of toothed metal
stretched between two or more wheels to cut material.

TYPES

 HORIZONTAL BANDSAW
 VERTICAL BANDSAW

DIFFERENCE

 Horizontal band saw is used to cut large pieces of metal while vertical band saw can
only cut small pieces.

 Horizontal band saw can cut the hard metals but a vertical band saw can only cut pliable
soft metals.

 The horizontal saws use a lot of power to cut hard metals while vertical saws only use
less power.

 A vertical band saw is used to cut curves and complicated shapes while the horizontal
saw cannot cut curves because it applies gravity only.

 In horizontal band saw machines, it is the blade that moves to cut the material but in
vertical band saw machines the work piece is the one that is moved across the
stationery band.

 Vertical band saws are used in homes and small shops while horizontal band saws are
used in big industries.

PARTS AND FUNCTION

Upper Wheel Guard

• Protects the operator of the blade

Blade Guard

• Covers the unused part of the blade

Lower wheel cover

• Protect the operator if the blade comes off of the lower wheel.

Rear blade guard

• Cover the rear part of the blade

Blade Tension Knob

• adjust your blades to just the right tension as recommended

Blade guides

• Keeps blade properly aligned

Table

• Supports the wood as it is being cut

Guide post

• Raises and lowers the blade guide

Blade

• Large band that revolves around the two wheels and cuts the wood.

Miter gauge

• Holds the wood at 90 degrees for crosscutting

POSSIBLE HAZARDS AND INJURIES

 Metal splinters
 Sharp edges and burrs
 Hair/clothing getting caught in moving machine parts
 Eye injuries
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

 Plan sawing procedures so there will be a maximum number of forward cuts and a
minimum of backing out cuts.

 Cut only Stock with a flat surface

 Make sure the proper width saw blade is on the machine for your particular job.

 Check to see all guards are in place.

 Make adjustments to the band saw only when the machine is at a dead stop.

 Set upper saw guide ¼ inch or less above the stock to be cut.

 Make sure that no one but you are inside the operator’s zone

 Wear face shield, safety glasses or goggles at all times.

 Hold material FLAT on the table at all times

 Keep fingers a safe distance from the saw blade

 Feed material into the saw blade at a moderate rate of speed after the saw blade has
worked up to its full running speed.

 Keep saw blade from TWISTING and BINDING when cutting curves

 Allow machine to come to a dead stop before backing out of long cuts.

 Keep waste from accumulating on the saw table

 Turn off power after using the band saw and stand by it until the machine has stopped

 Clear away scraps of material on the table only after the saw stops running and is at a
dead stop.
