MAST10008 Accelerated Mathematics 1

This document provides 5 questions about vector spaces and linear algebra concepts: 1. It asks to determine if given sets are vector subspaces and provide proofs or counterexamples. 2. It asks similar questions about sets being vector subspaces over different scalar fields. 3. It asks to determine if given vectors span a space, are linearly independent, or form a basis. 4. It asks similar questions about specific sets of vectors and functions forming bases. 5. It asks about linear dependence and independence of sets of functions using a given definition.

Tutorial 5: Vector Spaces

Q1. Are the following sets vector subspaces of the given real vector spaces? If so, prove your answer
carefully. Otherwise find a counter example to show why not.

(a) In R2 , M = {(t, t2 ) : t ∈ R}.

(b) In R2 , N = {(x, y) ∈ R2 : x ≥ 0}.
(c) In R3 , P = {(x, y, z) ∈ R3 : x − 4y + 3z = 0}.
(d) In M3,3 , Q the set of all 3 × 3 matrices with zero entries along the main diagonal.
(e) In P2 , S = {a0 + a1 x + a2 x2 ∈ P2 : a1 a2 = 0}.
(f) In F(R, R), T , the set of all functions f : R → R that satisfy f (4) = 0.

Q2. Are the following sets vector subspaces of the given vector spaces (with scalars as indicated)? If so,
prove your answer carefully. Otherwise find a counter example to show why not.

(a) In R2 (over R), W1 = {(x, y) ∈ R2 : x2 + y 2 = 0}.

(b) In F22 (over F2 ), W2 = {(x, y) ∈ F22 : x2 + y 2 = 0}.
(c) In C2 (over C), W3 = {(x, y) ∈ C2 : x2 + y 2 = 0}.
(d) In C2 (over C), W4 = {(x, y) ∈ C2 : Im(x) = Im(y) = 0} = R2 .

Q3. For each of the following, determine whether the vectors (i) span the given vector space, (ii) are linearly
independent, (iii) form a basis for the given vector space.

(a) {(1, 3, 0, 2, π), (−2, 1, 0, −π, 1)} ⊆ R5

(b) {(1, 1, 0), (1, 0, 1), (0, 1, 1)} ⊆ R3
(c) {(1, 1, 0), (1, 0, 1), (0, 1, 1)} ⊆ Z32

Q4. (a) Determine whether B = 2 − x, x4 , 3x3 − 7x + 1, x2 , 1 − x4 , 2 + x3 − x4 forms a basis for P4 .

0 1 −2 0 1 2 3
(b) Determine whether B = , , forms a basis for the vector space
−2 0 1 0 3 5
of all symmetric 2 × 2 matrices:

a b
S= : a, b, c ∈ R ⊆ M2,2
b c

(c) Is the set {(1 + i, 3 + i), (3 − i, 5 − 5i)} a basis for C2 ?

Q5. Consider the vector space F(R, R) of all functions from the real numbers to the real numbers.
Vectors f1 , f2 , . . . , fn ∈ F(R, R) are linearly dependent if there exist α1 , α2 , . . . , αn ∈ R such that for
all x ∈ R
α1 f1 (x) + α2 f2 (x) + · · · + αn fn (x) = 0(x) = 0 (1)
where at least one of αi is not zero.
Are the following sets of vectors in F(R, R) linearly dependent or independent?

(a) {cos x, sin x} (Hint: Choose two different values of x and solve equation (1).)
(b) {cos x, sin x, 1}
(c) {cos2 x, sin2 x, 1}
