Case Study on a LT induction motor used in pump

 The motor was getting tripped because of overcurrent and it had to be checked for shorting
of stator wires.
 We did the positive isolation and checked for shorting
 We used Megger for measuring the LG resistance of the stator wires.

MEGGER
The device enables us to measure electrical leakage in wire, results are very
reliable as we shall be passing electric current through device while we are
testing. The equipment basically uses for verifying the electrical insulation
level of any device such as motors, cables, generators, windings, etc.

Types of Megger
This can be separated into mainly two categories:-

1. Electronic Type (Battery Operated)

2. Manual Type (Hand Operated)

We used a manual type megger.

Advantages of a hand operated megger:

1. Still keeps important in such high-tech world as it’s an oldest method for IR value
determination.
2. No external source required to operate.
3. Cheaper available in market.

The motor whose resistance we measured had a power rating of 2

KW, speed 2840 rpm, voltage rating 415V and stator in Y connection.
Observation:
The resistance measured across each of the phase is around 100 ohms.
