Engineering Graphics and Computer Drafting: Assignment - 2

This document provides instructions for 9 engineering graphics and computer drafting assignments. The assignments involve drawing various curves based on given parameters, including: 1. Drawing the locus of a point with distances related to a fixed point and line. 2. Drawing the locus of a point where the sum of its distances to two fixed points is constant. 3. Drawing a hyperbola given the position of its vertex and focus, and drawing a normal and tangent. 4. Drawing an ellipse given the position of its foci and determining its major axis, drawing it using two methods. 5. Drawing an ellipse and determining its minor axis given the major axis and position of foci.

Assignment -2

1. A fixed point is 75 mm from a fixed straight line. Draw the locus of a point P moving such a
way that its distance from the fixed straight line is
a) Twice its distance from the fixed point;
b) Equal to its distance from the fixed point; Name the curves.

2. The distance between two fixed points is equal to 75 mm. A point P moves such that the sum
of its distances from the two fixed points is always a constant and is equal to 90 mm. Draw
the locus of P and determine the minor axis.

3. The vertex of a hyperbola is 65 mm from its focus. Draw the curve if the eccentricity is 3/2.
Draw a normal and a tangent at a point on the curve, 75 mm from the directrix.

4. The foci of an ellipse are 90 mm apart and the minor axis is 65 mm long. Determine the
length of the major axis and draw half the ellipse by concentric-circles method and the other
half by oblong method. Draw a curve parallel to the ellipse and 25 mm away from it.

5. The major axis of an ellipse is 100 mm long and the foci are at a distance of 15 mm from its
ends. Find the minor axis by using Arcs of circles method.

6. A ball thrown up in the air reaches a maximum height of 45 meters and travels a horizontal
distance of 75 meters. Trace the path of the ball, assuming it to be parabolic.

7. Two straight lines OA and OB make an angle of 75° between them. P is a point 40 mm from
OA and 50 mm from OB. Draw a hyperbola through P, with OA and OB as asymptotes,
marking at least ten points.

8. A circle of 50 mm diameter rolls along a straight line without slipping. Draw the curve traced
out by a point P on the circumference, for one complete revolution of the circle. Name the
curve. Draw a tangent to the curve at a point on it 40 mm from the line.

9. A circle of 50 mm diameter rolls on another circle of 175 mm diameter and outside it. Trace
the locus of a point on the circumference of the rolling circle for one complete revolution.
When it rolls (i) Outside and
(ii) Inside the other circle.
Name the curve. Draw a tangent and a normal to the curve at a point 125 mm from the centre
of the directing circle.
