FIRST ARTICLE INSPECTION
WORK INSTRUCTIONS

1.0 PURPOSE

To document the procedures involved in completing the First Article Inspection

process
2 OPERATIONS

2.1 First Article Inspection involves the specific inspection of one joint early in
each production run executed in the plant. The intent of this instruction is to
insure, early in a production run, that the pipe is being manufactured to
specification. One pipe joint among the first ten joints of every new
production run is randomly selected for the First Article Inspection process.
All inspection items recorded on the First Article Inspection form are to be
initialed by Quality Control.
2.2 Per the First Article Inspection form, the randomly selected pipe is first
identified on the form as to product type, date of manufacture, order
number, and pipe number. On selection the label is checked for
conformance with the relevant order details and identification items.
2.3 The pipe is weighed on either the balance scale or by use of the load cell
equipment dependent on the weight and the resultant weight is recorded as
the 1st weight on the form. Special customer requirements are then verified
to be in conformance with the Pipe Production Order.
2.4 Dimensional inspection is performed and recorded on the coupling OD and
a full dimensional thread inspection is performed on the pin thread end in
accordance with WI-751-015. Paint code bands are inspected and
recorded.
2.5 Body dimensions are checked and recorded in the “1st Check all OD
Dimensions” box on the form in accordance with WI-751-015.
2.6 A DSC test is performed in accordance with the WI-751-012 and recorded
on the form. A burn out test is performed in accordance with WI-824-004
and recorded on the form.
2.7 Should weight and/or body dimensional measurements exceed those
required by the Production Order the winding passes in the wind program
will be diminished as possible. After the first newly wound pipe is produced,
dimensions will be taken again on that pipe and recorded on the “2nd Check
all Dimensions” section of the form.
2.8 Should any measured criteria fall below minimum required specifications or
conditions production will be halted and corrected and all pipe produced
