INTRODUCTION

Pushkar is an important centre of pilgrimage for Hindus. The place has a magnetic appeal with
400 temples that are blue white and a number of bathing ghats. The town resounds with
chanting of prayers and religious songs, along with drums and gongs. Pushkar is a happy tourist
attraction and the main marketing spot sells Rajasthani handicrafts, scarves in tie and dye, to
the mix of eager tourists flocking from the world over. There is a dash of commercialism but
the town retains a mystique. The Nag Pahar is a small hill which separates Pushkar from Ajmer
a mere 11 km apart.

Pushkar is a favourite travel destination in Rajasthan, as it happens to be a temple town. The

town of Pushkar has grown curling around the Pushkar Lake which is a holy site said to have
legendarily appeared when a lotus was dropped by Lord Brahma upon the site . It is an old city
considered to be a chosen place where Brahma is worshipped. Pushkar lies on the shore of
Lake Pushkar and the deities Savitri and Gayatri are popularly worshipped here as they were
Lord Brahma’s wives. Since it is a temple town one would be visiting the most important
temples of Lord Brahma, Savitri and Gayatri Devi. Other major tourist attractions in Pushkar
would be the camel fair held in November. There are a number of hotels overlooking the
Pushkar Lake with rooftop restaurants for a serene view as you dine. The town has a no alcohol
and only vegetarian restriction.
Among the sightseeing places in Pushkar it would be great to watch the lake illuminated by the
evening aarti lamps. The Brahma Temple is enchanting with its evening puja chantings bells
and lamplight aradhana. The Savitri temple is the next in importance to the Brahma temple.
The Pap Mochini is 30 minutes away, and a temple dedicated to Gayatri, Brahma’s second
consort. Tourism in Pushkar has gained importance because there are spiritual tours conducted
on foot which is rejuvenating, besides there is scope for a memorable shopping experience,
enjoying coffee at little cafes; shopping for Rajasthani handicraft and taking camel safari to the
sunset point. Visiting simple temple towns like Pushkar are a relief from the humdrum of
complex city life where you can breathe at ease and give yourself a much needed break.
According to 2011 India census,[13] Pushkar had a population of 21,626. The town had 11,335
resident males and 10,291 females. Children in the 0-6 age group constituted 13.95 % of the
population. About 80% of the population including all age groups was literate (90% male
literacy rate, 70% female). The town had over 4,250 houses, or about 5 residents on average
per house.

Places to stay are an important component of the tourism product. They contribute to the overall
tourism experience through the standards of facilities and services offered by them. With the
aim of providing contemporary standards of facilities and services a lot of Hotel have come up
in the small city of Pushkar. From one star hotels to five star hotels, a lot of hotels have
mushroomed around the Brahma Mandir and the Pushkar lake. There are small settlements also
that cater to just till about 5 people at once. Tourism has been the primary source of income for
the people living in Pushkar.

The tourist that visit Pushkar vary from the ones who come for a one night stay, just to pray at
the Brahma Temple, the ones who come for a couple of days for a vacation and also the ones
who stay in the city for weeks at once to get the complete experience of the true culture of
Pushkar and to indulge in the daily routine of the people living in Pushkar.
