Background of the study

Recently, researchers are focused in making a material for the replacement of

existing engineering materials. Use of natural fibers is an alternative construction material

that can reduce the price, energy cost, and environmental impact. Natural fibers are

renewable resources.

Ferrocement is a composite material composed of a mortar reinforced with light steel

fabric/mesh, used to form thin sections. This study aims to have a sustainable ferrocement

using spirogyra fiber as mesh to help prevent cracking on plastering of wall. Also, the

researchers will conduct a test for tensile strength of ferrocement and ferrocement using

mesh made of spirogyra fiber. Alkaline treatment will be used for treating the spirogyra

fiber to enhance its surface roughness, tensile strength and the ability of bonding between

spirogyra fiber and mortar. of abaca and coconut fiber, each of the two fibers in this study

will test at two different percentages, volume of fibers/volume of concrete, along with the

plain concrete tests. This study will analyze the compressive strength of concrete with

addition of various volume-fractions of the combination of abaca fiber and coconut coir.

For each percentage, compressive, flexural and tensile strength will test on the concrete

specimens that will moist-cure for 28 days.

Further, substantial research work has been conducted on fiber-reinforced concrete

which is a concrete primarily made of a mix of hydraulic cement, aggregates, water and

reinforcing fibers. Fibers used are typically produced from steel and synthetic fibers such

as polypropylene, nylon or fiberglass. Fiber reinforced concrete satisfies the strength,

ductility and durability requirements of a high performance concrete material. Moreover,

fiber reinforced concrete including mainly steel, glass or other synthetic fibers, in addition

to natural fibers, have been used in many applications such as slabs on grade, airports and

pavements, tunneling, rock stability and shotcrete works (ACI 544.1R, 1996).

Objectives of the study

Generally, this study would like to determine the effect on the tensile strength of

ferrocement when algae fiber is use as mesh.

Specially, this study seeks to find the following:

1. Determine the tensile strength of ferrocement using different spacing of algae

fiber mesh.

2. Determine the significant difference in terms of tensile strength in ferrocement

and ferrocement containing algae fiber mesh.

3. Determine the significant relationship between the tensile strength of ferrocement

and the different spacing of algae fiber mesh.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the effect on the tensile strength of concrete when

algae fiber is use as mesh.

In further investigation, specifically this answer the following:

1. Is the algae fiber as mesh affect the tensile strength of ferrocement?

4

2. What are the different spacing of algae fiber mesh that will increase the tensile

strength of ferrocement?

3. What are the significant difference in terms of tensile strength in plain

ferrocement and ferrocement with algae fiber mesh?

Hypothesis of the study

Ha: There is a significant difference in terms of compressive strength in plain concrete

and concrete containing abaca fiber and coconut coir.

Ho: There is no significant difference in terms of compressive strength in plain concrete

and concrete containing abaca fiber and coconut coir.

Significance of the study

The primary purpose of this research is to contribute to studies about fibers. This

study finds to be significant to the following:

Civil Engineering Student. The completion of this study will be helpful to the future

researcher in providing information that will be basis of their studies.

Civil Engineers. The result of this study may be beneficial in providing ideas/data

about the useful of adding abaca fiber and coconut coir on the strength of concrete. It

provides opportunity in employment and may increase the income.

Industry. The success of this study will become the edge towards a progressive industry

with regard to the improving of coconut fiber and coconut coir as an additive in concrete.
5

Scope and Delimitations

The scope of this study is to determine the compressive strength of concrete using

different volume proportion of abaca fiber and coconut coir as an additive through the

requirements by ASTM standards. Controlled method will be used. This study also

includes the comparison of compressive strength between plain concrete and concrete with

abaca fiber and coconut coir. On the other hand, compressive strength determines the

mechanical properties through ASTM 39. The researcher will measure the length of fiber

to be place in the cylinder or core mold.

The concrete samples are to be cured within 14 to 28 days. After curing the most

appropriate mix design proportion will pick from all the mix design outcomes and this

specific proportion will be used for constructing a cylinder or cubes mold.

Definition of Terms

Additive. This refers to the abaca fiber and coconut coir material used in this study.

Cement. This is a binder, a substance used for construction that sets, hardens, and

adheres to other materials to bind them together

Concrete. This is a construction material composed of cement, fine aggregates (sand)

and coarse aggregates mixed with water which hardens with time.
6

Fiber. This refers to a thin thread of a natural or artificial substance.

Gravel. This refers to an aggregate of more or less rounded rock fragments coarser

than sand.
