Charmaine: Let us start with the founding editor of The Diliman Review and the
first president of the Philippine Writers' Association. MR. Nestor Vicente Madali

Claro: We also have the only person able to make music using simply a leaf and who
made it to the Guinness Book of World Records, MR. LEVI CELERIO!

Maritony: Hello, Sir, Madam. We are glad that you’re with us today.
Edith: Of course, we are very much pleased to be here.
NVM: Yes. Seeing these people is such an overwhelming feeling.
Charmaine: And with that, we really love to know you better. Right guys?

Levi: Well, I’m a prolific lyricist and composer for decades. I had four failed
relationships. But now, I am happily married to Lina Celerio and had 12 children. I
received a free education to the Academy of Music in Manila and became the youngest
affiliate of the Manila Symphony Orchestra.
Claro: Yes. Madam Edith.
Edith: I was born in Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya. I was known as a poet, fictionist,
teacher and a literary critic. I met Edilberto K. Tiempo, my husband, when I was
taking pre-law at the University of the Phillipines. Now, I am a mother of two, Maldon
Tiempo , and Rowena Tiempo -Torrevilas.
NVM: I am from Romblon and was raised in Mansalay, a southern town of the
Philippine province of Oriental Mindoro. I attended college at National
University (Manila) from 1927- 1930 but wasn’t able to finish undergraduate degree.
Sionil: I attended college at the University of Santo Tomas, Manila, 1946-1948. I am
Married to Teresita G. Jovellanos in 1949 and we had five sons and two daughters. I
was also a Staff member of Commonwealth, Manila, 1947-1948.
Maritony: What are your greatest achievements in life?
NVM: It was when I earned my first peso by playing the violin during a Chinese
funeral in Romblon. I also had my first published essay that appeared in
the Philippine Graphic and my first poem in Poetry in 1934. And when I was
proclaimed National Artist of the Philippines in 1997. It was such an honor to enrich
the Philippine music for no fewer than two generations with a treasury of
more than 4,000 songs in an idiom that has proven to appeal to all social
classes.
Edith: When I graduated as magna cum laude from Silliman University with a
Bachelor of Science degree in Education, majoring in English. I even received a
scholarship grant from the notable United Board of Christian Higher Education in
Asia and attained a doctorate degree in English from the University Of Denver,
Colorado in 1958.

Sionil: I became an assistant editor in the United States Information Agency, U.S.
Embassy, a managing editor of the Asia magazine in Hong Kong, and of course, being
a publisher of the Solidaridad Publishing House, and a general manager of
Solidaridad Bookshop.

Celerio: Making it to the Guinness Book of World Records as the only person able to
make music using simply a leaf is my greatest achievement in life. Also, I was
privileged to I earn the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Film Academy of the
Philippines. Given the Awit Award for Best Christmas Recording and Awit Award for
Best Traditional Recording.

Claro: Wow! That was very impressive!

Maritony: Alright! We just had a quick overview of their lives!

Charmaine: And yes! That really makes us proud being a Filipino. Right guys?

Maritony: Now, let’s see some of their exceptional works. Let’s start with this one.

NVM: This was entitled the bread of salt because of the staple breakfast food pan de
sal which is bread of salt in English, that was the core of this story. It is about a 14
year old male narrator who falls for a Spaniard plantation owner’s niece and realized
that the girl is out of his league. I clearly emphasized the themes of race and class
divisions in this story.

NVM: This was one of my greatest stories. A beautiful story of a husband and wife
being sunk to debt and having it doubled. Yet, made a way to settle things. This was
based on the courage and determination of people who find hardship in life’s renewal.

EDITH: We are put in the tradition of a romantic hero who runs away from a society
he rejects to seek regeneration. I set an exotic background of the little mining village
of Nibucal in the southern Philippines. A Blade of Fern sketches a panoramic vista
of rural life and problems of survival among miner prospecting for gold.

EDITH: This is a story of a search for identity. The rather inarticulate attempt of
Michael Linder to shape for himself a personal identification with the worlds that
would give ultimate meaning to his life paralleled by Marina’s own search.

SIONIL: Actually, this is a series of five historical and political novels that I wrote.
It is composed of five novels namely, Po-On, Tree, My Brother, My Executioner, The
Pretenders, and Mass. This traced the five generations of two families, namely the
Samsons and the Asperri through Spanish and American Periods in the Philippine
History up until the period after Philippine Independence.

CELERIO: I composed this song and the music was by Lucio San Pedro. It is a
nostalgic memory of childhood, encapsulated in the soothing melodies of a mother’s
lullaby. The music doesn’t only lulled a baby to sleep but gives comforting assurance
that things, not matter how bad, would turn the other way around.

Celerio: This is derived from the Ilokano Folk Song “O Naraniag O Bulan which I
translated to tagalog. And I am very much privileged that the Asia’s Queen of Song,
Ms Pilita Corrales recorded the song and became one of her signature tunes. This has
a wide appeal to everyone and was played on Ilocano Fiestas and other important
occasions.

You just heard it guys! And I am sure we all wanted to hear Mr. Levi Celerio, sing
