Master Clock Specification: General Requirements
1.0 CONTRACTOR
1.0.1 The contractor shall furnish all equipment, accessories, and material required for the
installation of a comprehensive communications system in strict compliance with these
specifications and applicable contract drawings. Any material and/or equipment
necessary for the proper operation of the system, which is not specified or described
herein, shall be deemed part of this specification.
1.0.2 The clock system shall have U.L., cUL, and F.C.C. compliance. All work must be
completed in strict accordance with all applicable electrical codes, including N.E.C.
Section 800-51 (i), under direction of a qualified and factory approved distributor, to
the approval of the owner.
1.0.3 The system is to be designed and configured for maximum ease of service and repair.
All major components of the system shall be designed as a standard component of one
type of card cage. All internal connections of the system shall be with factory-keyed
plugs designed for fault-free connection. The printed circuit card of the card cage shall
be silk screened to indicate the location of each connection.
2.0 MANUFACTURER
2.0.1 The manufacturer shall be a United States manufacturer. One manufacturer shall supply
the equipment described herein, and furnished per these specifications. All reference to
model numbers and other detailed descriptive data is intended to establish standards of
design, performance, and quality, as required. Equipment by Bogen Communications,
Inc., or approved equal, shall be acceptable.
3.0 SUBSTITUTIONS
3.0.1 Any system and/or equipment proposed as an equal to that specified must be proven to
conform to the standards contained herein. The contractor must obtain the architect or
engineer's approval in writing, prior to bidding equipment other than that specified.
The manufacturer's name, model numbers, and three (3) copies of shop/working
drawings complete with catalog sheets, technical and installation data shall be
submitted for approval.
3.0.2 Within thirty-five (35) calendar days after the date of award of the contract, the
contractor shall submit to the Architect for review, eight (8) copies of a complete
submission. The submission shall consist of five (5) major sections, with each section
separated with insertable index tabs. The first section shall be the "Index", which shall
include the project title and address, name of the firm submitting the proposal and the
name of the Architect. Each page in the submission shall be numbered chronologically
and shall be summarized in the index.

The second section shall include a copy of the authorized distributor's valid State
Contractors License, letters of factory authorization and guaranteed service, list of
projects of equal scope and list of proposed instrumentation to be used by the
contractor. The third section shall contain the comparative specification listing,
including a complete listing of the characteristics of the equipment to be furnished. The
fourth section shall contain an original factory data sheet for every piece of equipment
in the specifications. The fifth section shall contain a wiring destination schedule for
each circuit leaving each piece of equipment.
3.1 QUALIFICATIONS
3.1.1 The system shall be supplied by the manufacturer's authorized contractor who is
qualified in the proper installation, operation, and service of the system. Certification
shall be submitted verifying that the contractor is the manufacturer's authorized
contractor.
3.1.2 Upon request of the Architect/Engineer, the system proposed as an equal shall be made
available for demonstration. The demonstration shall be coordinated with the
Architect/Engineer and the end-user.
4.0.1 The contractor shall warrant the equipment to be new and free from defects in material
and workmanship, and will, within two (2) years from date of installation, repair or
replace any equipment found to be defective. This warranty shall not apply to any
equipment that has been subject to misuse, abuse, negligence, accident, or unauthorized
modification.
5.0.1 The contractor shall make available, and maintain a satisfactory service department
capable of furnishing equipment inspection and service. The contractor shall be prepared
to offer a service contract for the maintenance of the system beyond the warranty period.
5.0.2 The contractor shall instruct personnel designated by the owner in the proper use, basic
care and maintenance of the equipment. Such training shall be provided as an integral
component of the system.
5.0.3 The contractor shall warrant the system to be new and free of defects in material and
workmanship, and will, within two (2) years from the date of installation, repair or replace
any equipment found to be defective. This warranty shall not apply to any equipment,
which has been subject to misuse, abuse, negligence, and accident or unauthorized
modification.
6.0 TRAINING

6.0.1 The contractor shall instruct personnel designated by the owner in the proper use, basic
care, and maintenance of the equipment. Such training shall be provided as an integral
component of the system. District maintenance personnel shall be given technical training
at the manufacturer’s factory location.
PART 2: PRODUCTS
a. Master Control Unit: Microprocessor based unit with solid-state switching circuits,
program controls, and clock controls.
The Master Clock shall be the Bogen BCMA 3000 Series. The master clock shall have
a LED display, as well as a backlit, two row by twenty character LCD display. The
master clock shall have up to ten pre-programmed SNTP servers to use in case the
clock does not receive time from one of the servers via a web interface. The master
clock will be capable of receiving signals from all Bogen Master Clocks via RS485, as
well as 59 minute correction, 58 minute correction, National Time and Rauland, and
Dukane. The master clock shall have the capability of transferring a wired system into a
wireless system (with transmitter option). The master clock shall contain two clock
circuits that have the capability to run synchronous wire systems such as 59 minute
correction, 58 minute correction, National Time/Rauland or a once a day pulse for
intercom systems. The master clock shall be programmed via the 16 button rubber
tactile keypad. The master clock shall be capable of interfacing with the BCAM Series
analog clock via the Converter Box, and the BCRM Series analog clock and BCBD
1000 digital clock via RS485. The master clock shall be powered by 110VAC/60 Hz or
220VAC/50 Hz. The master clock is pending FCC approval.
Transmitter Option - The transmitter shall be capable of transmitting data to the BCAL
wireless analog clock and the BCBL wireless digital clock. The master clock shall be
capable of receiving a signal from any SNTP time server via the Internet. The
transmitter shall utilize 915–928 MHz frequency–hopping technology. The master
clock shall be capable of acting as a repeater while receiving a signal wired or
wirelessly from the main master clock.
Optional Relays (zones) - The master clock shall be capable of utilizing four or eight
zones that can be used for bell scheduling, lights, etc. The zones shall be capable of
being programmed via the 16 button rubber tactile keypad and LCD display.
GPS – The master clock shall have the option of having a GPS receiver built into the
unit for synchronization from the satellites via UTC.

Web Interface – The master clock shall be able to be programmed completely from a
web interface that can be accessed through any typical web browser such as Microsoft
Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox. The interface shall allow the user to program all
bell schedules, events, display features, IP settings of the master clock and any system
setting that the master clock has.
SNTP Server – The master clock shall have the capability to act as a SNTP server that
other devices can point to in order to receive the time through SNTP protocol.
Countdown for Digital Clocks – The master clock shall be able to set the countdown
time between events and have the digital clocks count down.
The secondary clock shall be Bogen BCAM Series clock with automatic protocol
detection. The clock will have plug and play features with no settings required. The
clock shall have self–diagnostic capabilities for protocol detection, last received
communication time and a comprehensive analysis of the entire clock. The clock will be
capable of having remote diagnostic capabilities from the master clock location. The
clock shall have automatic polarity detection, as well as a maximum correction time of
five (5) minutes. The clock shall be designed to be used in either a 2-wire or 3-wire
system with Sapling’s BCMA 2000 or 3000 Series Master Clock. When using Bogen’s
2-wire Digital Communication, the clock will immediately self–correct upon receipt of
the digital signal. The secondary clock shall also have the ability to accept sync–wire
communication protocols with hourly and daily correction. The secondary clock is to
have a microprocessor based movement. The clock shall have a low–profile, semi–flush
smooth surface metal case. The crystal will be shatterproof polycarbonate material.
Glass and visible molding marks are unacceptable. The clocks will be able to be
mounted to a standard single gang box. The clock is to have black hour and minute
hands, as well as a red second hand. The clock shall have UL, cUL and FCC
compliance.
The clock shall be 4.0” in height with a full 4.0” high efficiency red LED numeral
display (optional 2.5” when specified per plans). The clock shall operate as an RS485
digital secondary clock or as a Digital Communication 2-wire secondary clock with
12/24-hour display format and two levels of adjustable brightness and shall feature
immediate correction for time changes. The clock shall have messaging capabilities
including “BELL” and “FirE”. When input is lost, the colon of the clock display shall
flash. The clock bezel shall be anti-glare red with a smooth surface. No external
screws or studs shall be visible on the bezel or clock housing. The clock shall have UL,
cUL and FCC compliance’s.

Note: In applications where device has two facings (e.g. hallways, corridors) contractor
is to configure clock so as double face mount to allow viewing from either direction.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.0.1 While all work included under this specification is the complete responsibility of the
contractor, the division of actual work listed following shall occur.
3.0.2 The conduit, outlets, terminal cabinets, etc., which form part of the rough-in work shall
be furnished and installed completely by the electrical contractor. The manufacturer’s
authorized representative shall perform the balance of the system, including installation,
connections, etc.. The entire responsibility of the system, its operation, function, testing
and complete maintenance for one (1) year after final acceptance of the project by the
owner, shall also be the responsibility of the manufacturer's authorized representative.
3.1.1 All work described herein to be done by the manufacturer's authorized representative
shall be provided by a documented factory authorized representative of the basic line of
equipment to be utilized.
3.1.2 As further qualification for bidding and participating in the work under this
specification the manufacturer's representative shall hold a valid C-10 Contractor's
License issued by the Contractor's State License Board. The manufacturer's
representative shall have completed at least ten (10) projects of equal scope, giving
satisfactory performance and have been in the business of furnishing and installing

sound systems of this type for at least five (5) years. The manufacturer's representative
shall be capable of being bonded to assure the owner of performance and satisfactory
service during the guarantee period.
3.1.3 The manufacturer's representative shall provide a letter with submittals from the
manufacturer of all major equipment stating that the manufacturer's representative is an
authorized distributor. This letter shall also state the manufacturer guarantees service
performance for the life of the equipment, and that there will always be an authorized
distributor assigned to service the area in which the system has been installed.
3.1.4 The contractor shall furnish a letter from the manufacturer of the equipment which
certifies that the equipment has been installed according to factory intended practices,
that all the components used in the system are compatible and that all new portions of
the systems are operating satisfactorily. Further, the contractor shall furnish a written
unconditional guarantee, guaranteeing all parts and all labor for a period of two (2)
years after final acceptance of the project by the owner.
3.2 INSTALLATION
3.2.1 Plug disconnect: All major equipment components shall be fully pluggable by means of
multi-pin receptacles and matching plugs to provide for ease of maintenance and
service.
3.2.2 Protection of cables: Cables within terminal cabinets, equipment racks, etc., shall be
grouped and bundled (harnessed) as to type and laced with No. 12 cord waxed linen
lacing twine or T & B "Ty-Rap" cable. Edge protection material ("cat-track") shall be
installed on edges of holes, lips of ducts or any other point where cables or harnesses
cross metallic edge.
3.2.3 Cable identification: Cable conductors shall be color-coded and individual cables shall
be individually identified. Each cable identification shall be a unique number located
approximately 1-1/2" from cable connection at both ends of cable. Numbers shall be
approximately 1/4" in height. These unique numbers shall appear on the As-Built
Drawings.
