Worksheet 1 File Sizes

Data compression reduces file sizes by removing redundant information, allowing for faster transfer and loading of files. There are two types: lossless compression restores all original data while lossy compression permanently removes some data. File sizes increase in the order of bits, bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes and petabytes. Minimizing file sizes improves loading speeds for users. Resampling changes pixel numbers while resizing alters image size without changing pixels. Images should be compressed for online uploading and downloading but not for printing to maintain quality.

Compression for Transfer & Display of Data

What is the purpose of compressing data so it can be transferred and displayed?

Data compression (compaction) is the process of reducing the amount of data needed for the storage or
transmission of a given piece of information/file. Resulting in a smaller file size that is easier to transfer
and display. (Hemmendinger, n.d.)

What is the different between Lossy & Lossless?

With lossless compression, every little piece of data that was originally in the file remains after
the file is uncompressed. Meaning all the information is restored. Whilst lossy compression
reduces a file by permanently discarding certain information (that is usually redundant). When
the file is uncompressed, only a section of the original data is still there. (WhatIs, 2015)

File Size Minimisation Techniques

What is the purpose of minimising file sizes?

The purpose of minimising a file’s size is to ensure it is quickly and readily available to its users.
Using a large file size can make it harder for the web server to load its contents, resulting in
long, slow wait for users trying to access or utilize it. Smaller file sizes are much more practical
and load much faster in comparison, making this the better alternative in most circumstances.
(Iowa State University, n.d.)

Difference between the techniques of resampling and resizing when applied to images
Resampling is where one changes the number of pixels in an image (achieved via exporting)
whereas resizing is where one changes the size of an image without changing the number of
pixels it has (achieved via cropping). (photoshopessentials, n.d.)

What file size would you recommend for uploading digital & online files?
One should compress an image for uploading & online files, this is because the image will take quite a
long time to load and transfer online if not done so. Instead, opt to compress the image so that instead
of kilobytes it is reduced to low megabytes. This will enable the file to upload and download quicker, as
well as allowing the viewer’s browser to load it faster if uploaded online. (Auguste, 2019)

What file size would you recommend for printing?

One should not compress an image for printing, this is because the quality of the image will be
dramatically reduced if done so. Instead, consider the size of the print sheet (A3 and A4 etc.) and do
not compress an image before printing in order to achieve the highest quality image possible.
