Module 1 Practice Problem Solutions
1. (R) (i) Between which two disciplines did chemical engineering emerge?
(ii) Historically, how did chemical engineers influence the production of bulk
chemicals?
(iii) What is the mission of the AIChE? When was it founded?
Answer:
(i) Chemistry and Mechanical Engineering
(ii) Historically, chemical engineers strove to develop new methods for mass
production of bulk chemicals. The Industrial Revolution led to an
unprecedented escalation in demand, both with regard to quantity and
quality, for bulk chemicals such as sulfuric acid and soda ash. This meant that
the scale and efficiency of the corresponding production processes had to be
increased, and created the need for an engineer who (a) Understood how
machines worked; (b) Understood chemical reactions and transport
phenomena (e.g. how substances came together to react, how the required
conditions could be achieved); and (c) Understood the influence of the
equipment on the process.
(iii) Founded in 1908, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers
(AIChE)promotes chemical engineering education and practice, facilitates
exchange of chemical engineering knowledge, and provides opportunities for
professional advancement of chemical engineers.
2. (R) (i) By what name do chemical engineers refer to individual steps in a chemical
process?
(ii) What is the key distinction between a reactive and a non-reactive unit
operation?
(iii) Name two types of reactive and non-reactive unit operations.
Answer:
(i) Unit Operations
(ii) A chemical reaction
(iii) Reactive unit operations: batch reactor, fluidized bed reactor; Non-reactive
unit operations: filtration, distillation
Answer:
(i) E85—specialty chemical (type of fuel)
(ii) iPad battery—chemical device (lithium ion battery involves chemical
reactions)
(iii) Cheerios –microstructured product (haswell-defined microscopic structure
that gives rise to unique taste and texture of the cereal)
(iv) Huggies—microstructured product (product specially designed to absorb
excreted fluid)
(v) Prius—device involving chemical reaction (in addition to combustion of
gasoline, the use of the hybrid’s batteries involve chemical reactions)
(vi) Aspirin – specialty chemical (a drug substance)
(vii) Tylenol PM—microstructured product (tablet in which acetaminophen is
formulated with other ingredients so as to release acetaminophen at a steady
rate into the bloodstream)
4. (R) Here are some common unit operations: Adsorption column; Reactor; Centrifuge;
Compressor; Crystallizer; Distillation column; Dryer; Filtration device; Heat exchanger;
Holding tank; Mixer; Pump; Refrigerator. The following block diagram summarizes a
hypothetical process for producing a pressurized mixture of octane and ethanol. Each box
represents a unit operation. The inlet and outlet for each box are labeled. Identify one unit
operation for each box that could change the inlet components into the products (you will
not use all of the operations listed above).
