Basics of Convex Optimization - Convex Sets and Convex Functions

This document discusses convex sets and convex functions. It defines a convex set as one where the line segment between any two points in the set lies within the set. It also defines a convex function over a convex set as one where the chord formed by any two points on the graph lies above the graph. The document outlines properties of convex sets and provides examples of convex and non-convex sets. It also discusses extending the definition of convex combinations to more than two points.

Convex Function - Definition

A function f : C → R, defined over a convex set C is called convex if

f (λy + (1 − λ)z) ≤ λf (y ) + (1 − λ)f (z), ∀y , z ∈ C, ∀λ ∈ [0, 1].
We always consider R = (−∞, +∞].
Non-empty convex set C on R is always an interval. (Exercise!)

Concave Function

Concave function is a close relative of convex function.

A function f : C → R, defined over a convex set C is called concave if

|x| =
