4. Consider a system S with input x[n] and output y[n] related according to the block
diagram given in Figure 1.

The input x[n] is multiplied by e−jω0 n , and the product is passed through a stable LTI
system with impulse response h[n]. Is the system S (a) linear, (b) time-invariant, (c)
stable? Justify your answer in each case.

5. (a) The impulse response h[n] of a linear time-invariant system is known to be zero,
except in the interval N0 ≤ n ≤ N1 . The input x[n] is known to be zero, except in
the interval N2 ≤ n ≤ N3 . As a result, the output is constrained to be zero, except
in some interval N4 ≤ n ≤ N5 . Determine N4 and N5 in terms of N0 , N1 , N2 , and
N3 .
(b) If x[n] is zero, except for N consecutive points, and h[n] is zero, except for M
consecutive points, what is the maximum number of consecutive points for which
y[n] can be nonzero?

6. Determine the convolution of x1 [n] and x2 [n] for each of the following signals:
(a) x1 [n] = δ[n] + 3δ[n − 2] and x2 [n] = δ[n + 1] − δ[n − 1]
(b) x1 [n] = u[n − 4] and

10. Let X(ejw ) denote the Fourier transform of x[n]. Using the Fourier transform synthesis
or analysis equations, show that
(a) the Fourier transform of x∗ [n] is X ∗ (e−jω )
(b) the Fourier transofrm of x∗ [−n] is X ∗ (ejω )

11. An LTI system has impulse response h[n] = 5(−1/2)n u[n]. Use the Fourier transform to
find the output of this system when the input is x[n] = (1/3)n u[n].

12. (a) Determine the Fourier Transform of the sequence

(c) The DTFT of the sequence h[n + 1] is real.
Using these three clues, show that the system has an impulse response of finite duration.
