BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY
Directed by Bryan Singer
Bohemian Rhapsody, one of the top hits of an award-winning band named Queen. The
movie is all about the life of Freddie Mercury, lead singer of the British rock band. The movie
began with how Freddie joined the band in the year 1970 up to their Live Aid performance
during 1985. The film was directed by Bryan Singer under the production of the 20 th Century
Fox. The movie revolves on how Freddie evolved as a musician and especially as a person.
An Indian Parsi refugee from Zanzibar, Farrokh “Freddie” Bulsara, studies art at college
while working as a baggage handler at Hearthrow Airport in 1970. He and his friends often get
out at night. Then one night, Freddie went out to find the band “Smile” and with the help of
Mary Austin, who became his fiancé, he found the band outside and complimented them for
their performance. Fortunately he was able to be part of the band after he has shown his
irresistible talent in singing. They had so many gigs that made them popular and to be loved by
the people. As a lead singer, Freddie changed the name to “Queen”. They had released so
many singles and albums until EMI Records refused to release one, a six-minute song, the
Bohemian Rhapsody. Despite that, they have still made it. As they became popular, Freddie has
changed. He often came late at rehearsals and he eventually became arrogant. A very
important event in the movie, he later found out that he was bisexual. That is the reason why
his fiancé separated with him. Then Freddie started to have misunderstanding with his band
mates. He decided to leave the band. He pursued his career as a solo artist. They had just
reunited for one of the biggest concerts ever happened in history, the Live Aid.
One thing that I admire the most in the movie is the acting skills of the casts. Especially,
Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury. I really have no doubt on his Oscar award as best actor for
Bohemian Rhapsody. He deeply convinced me to the point that I thought that he is more
Freddie than the real Freddie. I’m just joking. But kidding aside, I really was impressed with the
actors. They really look like the real members of Queen, especially the main actor. I could say
that they really played their roles very well. Their emotions and delivery of the lines were really
great way to convey the message of the movie.
Another thing, the music was just so good. Since the movie revolves around the life
story of a band, it needed to have amazing tracks. They obviously used the songs by the Queen,
which made the movie classic. Even the props are almost exact. I was able to watch the real clip
of Queen’s Live Aid performance and I would say that the scene in the movie was a perfect
copy. No little details has been neglected, even a single cup of soft drink right on top of the
piano. For me, that was just wonderful.
