GIMP Tilt-Shift Effect

Thist-Shift effect can be made using image processing applications such as GIMP. This tutorial will
explain how to transform a photograph into a miniature using GIMP application. The trick is to
make a lengthwise selection on the photo using Quick Mask, then we apply gaussian blur filter, and
finally we adjust the hue-saturation. You can use GIMP to recreate other lens-effects likes fisheye or
lens-flare. For more details, please follow the steps below:

1. Open Image In GIMP.


Choose File> Open command, click your image, and then click the Open button. Stock 1980350.

Open image in GIMP.

2. Toggle Quick Mask.


Toggle Quick Mask by choosing Select> Toggle Quick Mask or else just press Shift+Q.
Press Shift + Q.

3. Select the Blend Tool.


Click Blend Tool icon. Make sure the color foreground / background in default (black / white) by
pressing D. In the Tool Options, select the FG and BG To Shape Bi-Linear.

Choose the Blend Tool.

4. Apply the Blend Tool (Gradient).


Apply blend or gradient tool on the document by clicking and dragging while pressing the Ctrl key.
Subsequently remove the Quick Mask by pressing Shift + Q.

Click drag and then remove the Quick Mask by pressing Shift + Q.

5. Apply a Gaussian Blur.


Select menu Filters> Blur> Gaussian Blur. Please fill in the Blur Radius, then click the OK button.
Remove the selection by choosing Select> None.
Apply a Gaussian Blur then remove selection.

6. Adjust Hue / Saturation.


To get more realistic miniature effect look, sharpen the color by adding saturation. Choose Colors>
Hue-Saturation. Drag the saturation slider to the right. Then click the OK button.
Adjust the Hue-Saturation.
