Introduction
Corrosion of cylinder head studs can cause the studs to break. This would result in a
damaged cylinder head gasket and thus allowing combustion gases to enter the
cooling water system, causing engine shutdown due to low cooling water pressure.
Renewal of cylinder head gasket and cylinder head studs is required after such
incidents.

Figure 1, Cylinder head stud

The cylinder head studs can break due to the following reasons:

Corrosion of the bottom part (below the o-ring) of a stud due to the deterioration
of the o-ring, i.e. due to ageing and as a consequence insufficient sealing. In
this case water may enter the stud bore (e.g. while washing). Corrosion may
also appear above the o-ring in case of continuous water leakage.
Allowed tensioning pressure exceeded when applying the hydraulic tool.
Excessive tool pressure might not cause the stud to break immediately, but it
can lead to an initial crack, especially in a stud which is weakened by corrosion.

Recommendation
Replace the o-rings for the cylinder head studs at every piston overhaul.
When corrosion is found, the following options exist:
Corrosion pits less than 0.1 mm deep: remove the pits by grinding/polishing.
Corrosion pits deeper than 0.1 mm: replace the stud.

NOTE:
Corrosion depth in threads can be hard to determine, therefore it is recommended to
replace the stud, whenever in doubt.

Replace the cylinder head studs whenever overtightened, i.e. whenever the nominal
tightening pressure has been exceeded by more than 10 %.

Mounting the cylinder head studs

1. Lubricate the threads of the stud with a thin layer of Mobilarma 524 or other
corresponding corrosion protection agent.
2. Mount the stud and tighten to torque 400 ± 40 Nm.
3. Fill the compartment between the stud and the engine block with Mobilarma 524 or
other corresponding corrosion protection agent. Even filling the compartment with
fresh engine lubricating oil is better than nothing.
Leave about 2 mm space between o-ring and corrosion protection oil.
4. Fit the o-rings.

NOTE:
It is recommended to check the tightening torque of the stud prior to mounting a
cylinder head.
