The document outlines the proper installation, maintenance and replacement procedures for Pegasus seals used on ship propeller shafts.

If the shaft is dismounted, the complete seal should be removed and cleaned. New gaskets and seals should be installed, lubricated with grease, and bolted back into place with the specified torques.

The seals can absorb radial shaft movement up to 0.4mm. Frequent movements over 0.4mm indicate an alignment issue requiring repair. When not running, the bearing clearance can be up to 1%.

Installation & maintenance manual

The Pegasus Seals have been designed and manufactured to the highest quality
standards.
We are confident that they will function satisfactory.

 To make sure the seal will perform as designed we would like you to observe if the following
parts are mounted as shown below.
Grease to be used between the seals Castrol Impervia GS or Equal
With the supply of the seals a tube with grease was included per yard nr.
General information:
1. If the propulsion engine / gearbox assembly is mounted on flexible mounts and NO thrust
block is installed, the shaft will travel a few mm’s forward and backward. The PEGASUS Seal is
designed to operate with a maximum travel of 5 mm backward and 10 mm forward
movement. (total maximum shaft travel = 15 mm). Make sure that when the shaft travels in
reverse the wearing liner item 2 will not run into the seal housing and that in ahead this liner
is not mounted to far out as in that case the aft radial lip seal way pass its runway. (see fig 1)

2. Before mounting, it shall be checked, that no damages on the seal lip sets are present.
3. The gap between the seals is to be filled with grease (type see parts list) before installation.
This grease will extend the service life of the seals.
4. Bolts are to be mounted by using tightened torques as give in above table
5. The standard spare parts kits is exists of the following items:
a. Gasket 105 (item 14)
b. Stand by seal rubber 105 (item 9)
c. 2 Pc split radial lip seal (Item 10)
d. O-ring set (Item 11)
6. If there are any concerns about the Pegasus Seal, do not hesitate to contact us immediately.

7. The Stand By Seal

8. The stand by seal can be used in emergency when serious leaking appears due seal failure or
in causes of maintenance. (changing packing rings)
9. The stand by seal can be operated by oil (or air) pressure.
10. A maximum pressure of 1 bar is allowed. (usually 0,5 bar will be more than enough to get the
stand by seal operational.
11. When in use the shaft may NOT be rotated. (so its not possible to have the shaft line used
with the stand by seal in use.
12. After usage the oil (or air) pressure is to be released.
Limitations
1. When in use, the seals can absorb a large radial swing of the shaft. Depending on the shaft
diameter, in combination with the actual shaft revs/min, this will vary. A tolerance of the
maximum radial dynamic movement of the shaft by not more than 0.4 mm is allowed.
2. If during operations a shaft will frequently swing more than 0.4 mm, a serious alignment
problem has shown up and immediately repairs are required. The shaft may exceed
marginally bigger radial movements during manoeuvring at lower speed.
3. When the shaft is NOT running, a maximum bearing clearance of 1% will still keep the seals
tight

Maintenance
1. It is advised to refill the gap between the seals with grease every time the seals are replaced
and/or when the shaft is replaced.
2. Every 5 years or max every 5000 running hours it is advised to check the condition of the
seals and the sealing face on the shaft. This can only be done by demounting the seal from
the tube, or if the shaft has to be removed.
3. In any case, the seals can be replaced without having the shaft and coupling dismounted.
4. When supplied as complete new seal, the Pegasus seals are equipped with endless seals they
can be replaced any time required (engines / shafts NOT rotating) without having the shaft to
be de-mounted.
5. On the GA drawings of the seal you will find information on spare parts and methods of
replacement.

CHAPTER A

Installation of a complete new seal during vessel new-building-period or during

overhaul with removed propeller shaft.

1. Check if all parts and the tube system is free of dirt and grease.
2. Check if the seal is proper condition and all parts are in place and available.
3. Inside the seal a plastic cover is protecting the seals and is keeping the grease between the radial
lip seals in place. This gap between the seals is filled with grease (type see parts list) and will
extend the service life of the seals. Keep this cover in place until the shaft is to be fitted. (this will
prevent that any dirt will get into the seal)
4. FIRTST install the shaft before mounting the seal!! This will prevent that the shaft, during
installation can lean on the seal, radial lip seals a damage them. So the seal will rest on the shaft.
5. Before installing the shaft check that the springs of the radial lip seals are all in place.
6. Before mounting the shaft make sure that no sharp edges are showing on the shaft. Further the
shaft, liners need to be equipped with smooth 15 degree chamfers facilitating that the radial lip
seals can slide in place.
7. When bringing the shaft in, slide the seal and gasket (item nr 14) over the shaft.
8. The wearing liner (item 7) and the Clamping ring (item 8) with all O-rings are placed on the shaft
separate from the Pegasus seal.
9. Gasket (item 14) is required, as the seal is mounted against the aft side of the sterntube.
10. Place the gasket against the sterntube face using a little lithium grease between so it sticks on the
tube to preventing falling down.
11. Before mounting, it shall be checked, that no damages on the seal lip sets are present.
12. Torque the mounting bolts up as per instructions in the Damen GA drawing.
13. Install water inlet and airinlet. Use loctite nr. 577 (pipe sealant) to mount the valve and other
fittings on the seal.
14. Place the liner back in place sliding it gently back avoiding that the radial lip seals get damaged.
15. Place the wearing liner in a way so that the radial lip seals will run on the ceramic raceway. (sea fig
1) Taking in account the travel of the shaft due to propeller trust.
16. Position the O-ring (item 11) between the forward face of the wearing liner (item 7) and clampring
(item 8)
17. Mount the screws (items 17 and 18) and apply torques as stated earlier in this manual
18. Open the isolation valves
19. Check for water flow through the seals.
20. Record pressure gauges reading.
21. Record system water temperature and
22. Compare the readings of all shaft lines.
23. If there are any significant differences, examine where these differences are coming from. If
no clear explanation can be found, the building yard is to be contacted immediately.
Chapter B

Replacement Instructions for the seals by SPLIT seals with a propellershaft in

position.

When complete new seal assemblies have been supplied, endless radial lip seals are mounted. When
the seals need to be replaced while the vessel is in the water and or the shaftline is NOT removed, you
can use split seals.
Split seals have a split at 1 place and are seals, of which the rubber seal rings can be replaced without
the need to remove the propeller shaft. For replacement of the forw seal set, the following instructions
are to be followed up.

1. Lock the shaft using the dedicated shaft locking device, if installed. This will prevent the
gearbox clutch to be activated.
2. Close the seal isolation valves of the water lubrication system.
3. Clean the shaft area right behind the seal thoroughly.
4. If the vessel is in the water!! than pump up the stand-by-seal with an air pressure of approx 0,5
bar. (max 1 bar)
5. Unscrew screw (item nr 18) of the clamp ring
6. Remove all screw (items nr 17)
7. Pull the clamp ring (item nr 8) forwards. Remove the O-ring (item 11)
8. Than you can pull the wearing liner forward.
9. Remove bolts (items nr 21),
10. Remove the Backing plate (item 2).
11. Pull the first radial lip seal out by using a small hook.
12. Cut or saw the radial lip seals and its spring (item nr 10) of the shaft.
13. Take the first spacer ring out of the housing. There are 2 threaded holes in the face of the ring that
you can use to put a M8 screw in that will help pulling it out.
14. Remove the 2nd radial lip seal as you did the first one and also cut this one away.
15. Check the clearance between shaft and seal housing at bottom side and at top side to check if the
bearings are worn out or not.
16. Check if the seal seat is still in good condition and clean all faces thoroughly. Remove any grease
an dirt.
17. If all is OK, parts are clean and the bearing clearance is still within tolerance then we can start
mounting the new split radial lip seals and assemble the whole Pegasus seal again.
18. Take the spring from each seal (see details) and unscrew the joint. Bring the spring around the
shaft until the connection of both ends of the spring is visible and, holding one end in each hand,
twist the other end a few turns counter clockwise.
19. Take both spring ends , wind them counter clockwise , bring the ends together and release the
spring ends to obtain a proper engagement. To avoid any ‘ curl-in’ tendency at the split, the
precautions, detailed in figurers 1 – 3 shall always be followed.
20. Move the seal around the shaft and lift the spring into the groove in the seal lip.
21. Ensure that the two spring ends match perfectly, with the split at the top side.
22. Push the seal evenly into the chamber and also press firmly against the back side of the housing.
23. During the installation of forward split radial lip seal, grease (according to parts list) shall be added.
24. Do not grease the seal facing the bearing side as otherwise grease can come in the system.
25. Double check that all springs are in correct position in the seat of the split radial lip seal

Figurer 2

Figurer 3

26. Place the backing plate (item 2) in place and fasten all bolt connections in reverse sequence of
removal. Apply torques as stated on the drawing.
27. Place the liner back in place sliding it gently back avoiding that the radial lip seals get damaged.
28. Place the wearing liner in a way so that the radial lip seals will run on a “ fresh” raceway.
29. Glue a new O-ring (item 11) around the shaft between the forward face of the wearing liner
(item 7) and clamp ring (item 8)
30. Mount the screws (items 17 and 18) and apply torques as stated on the drawing
31. Release the oil (or air) pressure from the stand by seal.
32. Open the isolation valves
33. Check for water flow through the seals.
34. Record pressure gauges reading.
35. Record system water temperature and
36. Compare the readings of all shaft lines.
37. If there are any significant differences, examine where these differences are coming from. If
no clear explanation can be found, the building yard is to be contacted immediately.
CHAPTER C

Replacement of the complete seal or overhaul.

If the vessel is slipped and the shaft is dismounted and the seal as a complete item is to be dismounted for an overhaul
than follow these instructions are to be followed up.
1. When the shaft is to be pulled, always dismount the seal complete seal from the tube so it rest on the
shaft.
2. Close the seal isolation valves of the water lubrication system.
3. Clean the shaft right behind the seal thoroughly.
4. Remove the water inlet
5. Remove the stand by seal inlet
6. Remove screws (items nr 20)
7. Gasket (item nr 14) needs to be replaced by the new gasket!! So the old (item nr 14) needs to be removed
completely and both sealhouse face and sterntube face require thoroughly cleaning.
8. The liner was removed earlier when the shaft was removed.
9. Remove screws (items nr 21),
10. Remove the backing plate (item 2).
11. Pull the first radial lip seal out by using a small hook.
12. Take the first spacer ring out of the housing. There are 2 threaded holes in the face of the ring that you can
use to put a M8 screw in that will help pulling it out.
13. Remove the 2nd radial lip seal as you did the first one
14. Pull out the stand by seal together with the support ring (item nr 5).
15. Check if the seal seats and rings are still in good condition and clean all faces thoroughly. Remove any grease
or dirt.
16. If all is OK, parts are clean we can start mounting the new stand by seal and (split) radial lip seals and
assemble partly the Pegasus seal again. ( they liner will be positioned if the shaft is in place again. !!! Note!!
BEFORE mounting the shaft do NOT forget to slide the wearing (liner 7), with the new O-rings (item 11) and
the clampring ring (item 8) over the shaft.
17. Place the new stand by seal (item nr 9) around the support ring (item nr 5).
18. Slide the stand by seal and support ring back in position. (do NOT yet mount the set screws item 19!!)
19. Take the spring from each seal and unscrew the joint. Turn the spring around the shaft until the connection of
both end of the spring are visible and, holding one end in each hand, twist the other end a few turns counter
clockwise.
20. Take both spring ends , wind them counter clockwise , bring the ends together and release the spring ends to
obtain a proper engagement. To avoid any ‘ curl-in’ tendency at the split, the precautions, detailed in figurers
1 – 3 (chapter B) shall always be followed.
21. Pass the seal around the shaft and lift the spring into the groove in the seal lip.
22. Ensure that the two spring ends match perfectly, with the split at the top side.
23. Push the seal evenly into the chamber and also press firmly against the back side of the housing.
24. During the installation of forward split radial lip seal, grease (according to parts list) shall be added.
25. Do not grease the seal facing the bearing site as otherwise grease can come in the system.
26. Place the backingplate (item 2) in place and fasten all bolt connections in reverse sequence of removal. Apply
torques as stated on the drawing.
27. Tight the set screws items 19.
28. After the shaft is mounted again the wearing can be positioned and mounted.
29. Place the liner back in place sliding it gently back avoiding that the radial lip seals get damaged.
30. Position the wearing liner in a way so that the radial lip seals will run on a “ fresh” raceway.
31. Mount the screws (items 17 and 18) and apply torques as stated on the drawing
32. Open the isolation valves
33. Check for water flow through the seals.
34. Record pressure gauges reading.
35. Record system water temperature and
36. Compare the readings of all shaft lines.
37. If there are any significant differences, examine where these differences are coming from. If no clear
explanation can be found, the building yard is to be contacted immediately.
