Assessment Notification: Cammeraygal High School

The document provides instructions for a Year 9 iSTEM assessment at Cammeraygal High School. Students are asked to: (1) analyze data collected from experiments on a standard mouse trap car to determine its velocity, acceleration, and momentum; (2) design and conduct an additional experiment to improve the car's motion; and (3) submit a written report presenting their findings and proposing a development to further enhance the car's performance, supported by relevant data. Students will be evaluated on their ability to process and analyze experimental results, communicate scientific ideas and evidence through graphs and language, and develop evidence-based arguments to support an improvement proposal.

Introduction

When working in research and development (R&D) it is imperative to communicate with your employer
about the project you are working on. This allows them to gain an insight into where their funding is
going, the progress you are making and where the project is going to be heading.

The most effective way to communicate in the R&D field is through written scientific reports. These
documents are essential in any R&D cycle as it is where the researchers record and present their findings
on the parameters of the project, as well as, provide potential areas for development.

Task Description

Students have built a standard mouse-trap racer in class, and developed a number of experiments to
investigate the motion generated by the standard racer. Using the data collected in these experiments,
students will need to present their findings on the parameters of the cars (its velocity, acceleration and
momentum).

In addition, students are being asked to present the toy manufacturer with ONE development proposal
for improving the standard cars motion and provide reliable scientific data to support their chosen
development.

What your report must include:

1. Prepare a document that communicates the parameters of the standard mousetrap racer (velocity, acceleration
and momentum)

2. Include relevant scientific graphs and tables in order to reliably state the parameters of your standard racer.

3. A development proposal for improving the standard cars motion

4. Include relevant scientific graphs, tables and data in order to reliably state the improvements effect on the car.

Rubric
You will be assessed on how well you:

 demonstrate your ability to calculate the velocity, acceleration and momentum of the mouse trap racer and
further apply this to an additional experiment to lead to an improvement in the cars motion

 demonstrate skills using mathematical, scientific and graphical methods whilst working with a partner

 evaluate data from your additional experiment and your teams research to develop evidence-based
arguments and conclusions for a proposal for further development.
