CIDR

CIDR (Classless Interdomain Routing) allows more flexible allocation of IP addresses compared to the system of IP address classes, increasing the number of available internet addresses. CIDR represents a range of IP addresses where the first bits indicate the starting address and the remaining bits determine the ending address. Organizations are assigned a block of 2^n class C addresses that are grouped together and addressed using network bits and a host ID. For example, 4 class C networks can be represented together using a supernet mask of 255.255.252.0 and address of 213.2.96.0/22.

CIDR (Classless Interdomain Routing)

- sometimes called Supernetting

- allows more flexible allocation of IP Addresses
compare to the system of IP Address classes which results
to the increase in number of available internet addresses.
What does CIDR Represents:
for example:
CIDR Represnting IP num. from… To…
32.0.0.0/8 32.0.0.0 32.255.255.255
or
32/8
CIDR Represnting IP num. from… To…

32.0.0.0/8 32.0.0.0 32.255.255.255

or
32/8

- the 8 represents the first 8-bits that will be use to indicate

the starting IP number
- the remaining 24 – bits (32-8) is use to determine the
ending IP number. All 24 remaining bits can be either1’s or
0’s.

Start

Everything in X is either 1 or 0
End(maximum)
How CIDR works:
- Organization assigned 2^n class C Addresses
(with contiguous address space)
-Addressing: use network bits with host_id

Ex. 4 class C addresses outside a single network:

Natural Class C:

Class C IP : 213.2.96.0
- 4 address contiguous networks:

Supernet Mask: 255.255.252.0

Supernet Address: 213.2.96.0/22
