UNIT 24:

SOUND EDITING
Learning Aim B & C
Volcano Edit
The sound files were pre-recorded from Youtube which I had
imported into premiere pro. Before I could use them in the
edit. I made sure all of the clips were relevant and clearly
named so that I would be able to find each one when I
needed to use them. When the audio was flawed, I used in
and out points to select specific parts that were in the middle
of the audio that I wanted to keep without having to keep the
whole clip and delete the rest. I the duplicate sound, such as
the explosion, rather than using the mouse pad because they
make editing quicker, simply copy and paste.

I also had to import pre-recorded digital sound clips such as

explosions and screams from Youtube to Premiere Pro so
that I can use them in my edit. I did this by converting sound
recordings from youtube to mp4. During editing I had to
move the audio exactly where the audio would typically be
and make it seem like it is in sync as the video was silent.
Hospital Edit
The sound in the hospital edit was really quiet and difficult to
hear, and in order to increase the audio while maintaining in
between the legal sound, I raised the audio to up to 6 dB.

I also decided to keep the reaction of the patient whilst

having the audio of the doctor, due to the fact that I wanted
to produce a sense of shock. This is because the moment
would be emotional and should be focused solely on the
reaction of the patient and her husband as she’d be
diagnosed with cancer. Because of this, it also creates
continuity between the shots and letting the scene flow more
smoothly instead of letting the doctor finish speaking before
jumping to the patient.
Match Cut Edit
The RAW footage didn’t contain any audio that I wanted to
create an intense fight scene as it had talking in the
background and no physical touching when the fighting
occurred. Instead, I layered different sounds such as
grunting, punching, gunshots and etc, to provide sound for
each action so that we’re aware that actions are being made.

I also added in a soundtrack to fill in the blank spaces and it

builds excitement as an action scene would normally need.
The soundtrack was extremely loud and therefore I had to
lower the sound levels to stick to the legal sound range and
to be able to hear the sounds of the actions.

At the end of the video, I ended the scene with a sound of a

gunshot as a way of ending the video since the soundtrack
was too long and an attempt with a fade on the soundtrack
didn’t sound right.
Cubase Pro
Cubase Pro or Cubase Pro 9.5 is a programme compatible with both Windows and Mac and is designed specifically for
professional producers, composers and mixing engineers to create music. The programme has loads of advanced editing
features; despite this, the DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) is extremely stable and is confirmed the most stable DAW in the
list. Furthermore, there is a tablet app called the Cubasis (which is sold for £44) and just like the software, it can be used for
recording, editing and mixing on your tablet and the files can easily be transferred to your Cubase on your desktop. Cubase
Pro is also pricey with the DAW being sold at the price of £395. Due to the fact that the MiDI editing tools is so advanced, it’s
difficult to master as it allows you to edit velocity compression, adaptive quantization and many more.
Pro Tools
Popular to many producers, Pro Tools, also known as the industry-standard DAW is commonly used in a
lot of studios to the point where it has become standardized. It is also known for it being a diverse
DAW, working with both Windows and Macintosh. Pro Tools possess solid effects and mixing tools which is
usually used for significant work that is used for broadcast-level productions. This could be the reason why the DAW is one of the
most expensive in the market, starting at £499 for Pro Tools and £2499 for Pro Tools HD which comes with a HD core system.
Pro Tools also supports great MIDI capabilities for MIDI compositions but lacks the creativity with the sound and MIDI composing
as the MIDI tools are not as advanced. Lastly, there is a shortage of good stock instrument VSTs in Pro Tools and it is difficult to
play around with sound, such as working on looping, slicing and dicing audio.
Logic Pro
Logic Pro is a popular DAW compatible with the Mac format and was released in 2002 and then was
bought by Apple. Logic Pro is one of the ‘most complete’ DAW in the market as it provides the user
with effects, plugins, VST, instruments and tools which allow you to produce soundtracks. As a result
of this, Logic Pro is popular with film scorers and music producers. The DAW also provides a lot of
instruments that are in the software that most other softwares don’t have. But features such as adding audio from your
iPhone or iPad or having various arrangements in a track should be added in the software. The only con for Logic Pro X
would be that it’s only compatible for Mac users only. The DAW is also expensive with the price of £199.99.
FL Studio
FL Studio is a DAW that is specifically for windows, however, there is a Mac version that can be used even though it’s in its
alpha stages. FL Studio is the most popular DAW for electronic music producers as it contains a variety of instruments that
can be mixed and is one of the best DAWs to do great automations, however, it isn’t good with audio recordings. FL Studio is
best for making beats, loop-based compositions and electronic music production and it doesn’t need a MIDI controller to
work. Due to the latency engine, virtual instruments within the DAW is better than audio recordings imported. The prices of
acquiring FL Studios ranges from £89 to £169 and only requires updating rather than buying more plug-ins.
Premiere Pro
Premiere Pro or Premiere Pro CC is an editing programme that is part of the adobe creative
cloud and is used by many graphic designers, film editors and computer animators however
aimed at any home users who enjoy editing. Some media companies quickly adopted the app
to create films such as Deadpool, Thunderbirds Are Go and Avatar. Premiere Pro works well for
both Windows and Mac and has a powerful editing software that allows you to manipulate
footage software that allows you to manipulate footage, audio and images in any way that you desire. Whilst the programme
has a power editing software, Premiere Pro keeps the app updated every often to refrain from any bugs from occurring. The
software can integrate with other Adobe applications such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe After Effects. Your project in
Premiere Pro can be worked on other computers due to the introduction of the server based editing “Adobe Anywhere”.
Final Cut Pro
Final Cut Pro is a consumer-friendly editing programme directly for Macintosh and has many
powerful editing tools within the app. The software provides non-linear, non-destructive editing
from any QuickTime video and you can also import projects directly from iMovie for iOS.
Furthermore, it has an unlimited amount of audio tracks and multicam editing, making the
software much easier to handle. Final Cut Pro can also edit with 4K, HDR and 360 degree
recordings. Final Cut Pro is fairly expensive with the price being £237. However, it is much
cheaper compared to its old price of £793.
Documentary Edit
For my documentary edit I had to make sure my audio levels
was able to pass the QC test, therefore I lowered my audio
down to -6 to -8. In the edit I had to merge the video clip with
a separate audio clip from the tascam as it produced better
audio with less muffling or hissing that is produced from the
mic of the camera; I had to cut out certain parts of the
interview because of this too. With the tascam recordings, I
place them below the original sounds from the camera so I
can hear where to place the audio to sync the tascam audio
to the camera audio. After being synced up, I move the
tascam audio onto the original audio to replace it. This is
good for the sound as it cancels out the muffling and hissing
sound coming from the environment outside and the camera
itself.
