The coding questions will provide you with some information that is in code form. This
information can be decoded using the key that is present either within the question or within the
options. Here we will start with the first type or the letter coding. Let us begin!
Letter Coding
This is the code that is derived on the basis of alphabets. usually, the position of alphabets is
used. For example, let us see the following question.
Example 1: In some language, “EXAM” is coded as “FYBN”. In the same language, how will
we code “RESULT”?
Answer: The first step is to detect the code. For that, we need to focus on the word EXAM. The
first letter E in code is F, similarly the code for X is Y, for A it is B and for M it is N. Thus we
see that in this language the alphabet is shifted to one step to the front. Thus the code for R will
be S and hence the correct option here is A) SFTVMU.
Number Coding
Example 2: In a certain code, “Delhi is capital” is coded as “7 5 9”. The sentence “capital are
beautiful” is coded as “3 6 9”, and “Delhi is beautiful” is coded as “6 7 5”. Also “Patna also
capital‟ is coded as “9 2 4”. What is the code for “beautiful” in this code?
A) 2 B) 4 C) 5 D) 6 E) 7
Answer: To solve codes like these remember the order of the numbers may be anything. For
example, in “Delhi is capital” and “Delhi is beautiful”, we can see that the words “Delhi is” are
common and thus we can see that capital is 9 and beautiful is 6. Therefore the correct option here
is D) 6.
Answer: Let us see if we can figure it out word for word. We already know that the code for
beautiful is 6. From the code “Delhi is beautiful” as “6 7 5” we see that “is” may be represented
by 7 or 5. If we take a look at the code “Delhi is capital” which is present as “7 5 9”, we notice
that we can’t get the code for “is” as the data is not sufficient. So the correct option is E) Data
Insufficient.
Symbol Coding
In the symbol coding, we use the symbols like “!@#$%^&*()_”, to represent words or letters.
These codes are then used to determine a code for the words that are written down. Let us see an
example.
Answer: In the code, we can see that the code for L is @. Building on to that we can see that the
option B) *?%&@$# is the correct option.
Miscellaneous Examples
Example 4: In the following, a certain code is given. According to this code, “before West to
mailing” is written as “ad mi ja no”, “the West to Himalaya” is written as “ku ja ig ad”. Also
“mailing of the layout” is written as “be ku zo mi” and “to should of changes” is written as “be Ii
ya ja”.
Then what is the code for “should”?
A) be B) Ii C) ya D) ja E) Data insufficient
Answer: To solve these types of questions, a table may come in handy. Check for the two
sentences that have the most number of similar words. Let us put all the terms in the table and
see if we can get the correct answer or not. Let us see what “to” is coded as:
The two have ony one code in common. This means that the relation can’t be determined. Thus
the option is E) Data insufficient.
Example 5: In a certain code, we write the word “SUSHI” as “RTRGH”. How ill you write the
sentence ” Who are you” in it?
A) Vgn zqd xnt
Answer: The letter before S is T and this is the rule for the code here. A letter that comes just
before the one in the given word is the code. So the sentence ” Who are you” will be coded as
“Vgn zqd xnt”. The correct option is thus A) Vgn zqd xnt.
Practice Questions:
Ans: E) Either Mk or Vk
Example 1: If EODGH is the code for BLADE, what is the code for CRICKET?
Solution: FULFNHW
As,
Similarly
Example 2: If EARTH is coded as 41590 and PALE as 2134, what is the code for PEARL?
Solution: 24153
codes for letters are: P=2, E=4, A=1, R=5 and L=3
Example 3: In a certain language, ‘put tir fin’ means ‘delicious juicy fruit’; ‘tie dip sig’
means ‘beautiful white lily’, and ‘sig lon fin’ means ‘lily and fruit’. What is the code for
‘and’?
Solution: ‘lon’
Common code from first and third statement for ‘fin’ is ‘fruit’. From second and third statement,
‘sig’ is ‘lily’. So ‘lon’ means ‘and’ in third statement.
Type 1: Letter Coding
Methods of coding:
Example 4: The word RUN is coded as SVO. What should be the code letters of LAY?
Solution: Here,
Hence,
Solution: Clearly, we can see that each letter of the word DELHI is moved one step backward to
obtain the code.
Solution: Clearly, when COURAGE is coded, some letters are interchange with respect to their
positions, i.e., odd position are interchanged.
Position of 1 changes to 3 and 3 to 1. Position of 5 changes to 7 and 7 to 5.
COVER = 3 + 15 + 22 + 5 + 18 = 63
∴ BASIS = 2 + 1 + 19 + 9 + 19 = 50.
Example 8: In a given code SISTER is coded as 535301. UNCLE as 84670 and BOY as 129.
How is RUSTIC written in that code?
1. 633185
2. 185336
3. 363815
4. 581363
SISTER UNCLEBOY
53530184670 129
Solution:
and
So,
In substitution coding some particular objects are assigned as code names and then question is
asked that is to be answered in the code language.
Example 10: If wall is called window, window is called door, door is called floor, floor is
called roof and roof is called ventilator, what will a person stand on?
1. Door
2. Ventilator
3. Roof
4. Floor
Solution: Since a person stands on the floor and in the given code language floor is called roof.
In this type of questions, three or more sentences are given in the coded language and the code
for a particular word is asked. To find the code for the particular word, pickup two sentences
bearing a common word and the common code word will mean that word. Proceeding in similar
manner, we can be determined a particular code word for each word of given sentences.
Example 11: In a certain code language, ‘po ki top ma’ means ‘Usha is playing cards’. ‘kop
ja ki ma’ means’ Asha is playing tennis’, ‘ki top sop ho’ means ‘they are playing football’
and ‘po sur kop’ means ‘cards and tennis’. Which word in that language means ‘Asha’?
1. ja
2. ma
3. kop
4. top
Solution. (a): Comparing relation in each of the statement, we get Asha is coded as ‘ja’.
Directions: In each questions below is given a group of digits followed by four combinations of
letters or symbols numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4. You have to find out which of the combinations
correctly represents the group of digits based on the coding system and the conditions given
below and mark the number of that combination as your answer. If none of the combinations
correctly represents the group of digits, mark 5, i.e., ‘None of these’ as your answer.

4. $R%D©$
5. None of these
Solution. (d):
Solution. (a):
Directions: These questions are based on code language which utilizes letters in the English
alphabet. In each question, there is a word written in capital letter, with one letter underlined. For
each letter in that word there is a code written in small letters. That code is denoted by 1, 2, 3, 4,
and 5 not in the same order. You have to find out the exact code for the underlined letter in the
word. The number of that code is the answer. Please note that the same letter appearing in other
word(s) may be coded differently.
1. hj
2. su
3. tv
4. pr
5. df
Solution. (2): Each single letter is expressed as two letters, one behind and the other ahead of the
given letter. Therefore, A becomes zb, B comes ac and so on.
1. R
2. O
3. H
4. Q
5. I
Solution. (4): All the letters of the word are coded as one letter behind.
1. c
2. w
3. d
4. h
5. v
Solution. (b): All the letters of the word are coded as three letters ahead.
Now, you must have been aware of the various kind of coding-decoding patterns. Point to be
noted that the patterns discussed under this chapter are commonly known pattern/ basic patterns.
So, if you practice hard, you find that after some times you become competent enough to solve
coding-decoding problems even if certain changes are made in such problems to surprise or
puzzle you.

20. If NITIN is coded as %%^## and TEEN is coded as &^#& , then TIP is coded as
a. #%^
b. @^%
c. #^&
d. ^#$
Answer: b. @^%
Explanation:
NITIN = %%^##
So, N and I are % or #.
TEEN = &^#&
So, E = &
NITIN and TEEN has single T in common. Only ^ is single in both.
So, T = ^ ; Therefore, N=# ; So, I=%
P is new letter so it must have new symbol.
➁ LETTER CODING:
Here letters are assigned codes according to a set pattern or rule concerning the
movement or reordering / rearranging of letters and you need to detect this rule to
decode a massage. Sometimes, specific codes are assigned to particular letters
without any set pattern. Observe a few examples to know the various reordering or
rearranging techniques.
Direction for example 3: In these questions the real alphabets in a word are replaced
by certain other alphabets according to a specific rule to form its code.
Example 3: In a code language if TRAINS is coded as RTIASN, how PISTOL will
be coded in the same language?
(a) SITLOP
(b) IPSTLO
(c) SIPTLO
(d) IPTSLO
Solution: If we compare the basic word {TRAINS} with the coded word {RTIASN}, we
would see that the letters used in the word are same as in the basic word but their
order of placement has been changed. Letter T at first position of the basic word has
been placed at second position in the coded word and the letter R at the second
position has been placed in the first position.
It means that in this question, letters of the basic word have been interchanged i.e.
first letter with second, third with the fourth and so on. And thus we get the coded
word. So PISTOL will be coded as IPTSLO. Hence option (d) is the answer.
➂ NUMBER CODING:
Numerical code is given or value is assigned to a word. Here the only way to relate
the alphabets & numbers is by associating the positions of the letters in the English
alphabet. Sometimes any mathematical operation like addition or subtraction can be
performed using the position of the letters. Direct coding questions can also be asked.
Direction for example 4: In this question, either numerical code values are assigned
to a word or alphabetical code letters are assigned to the numbers.
Example 4: If PAINT is coded as 74128 and EXCEL is coded as 93596, then how
would you encode ACCEPT?
(a) 455978
(b) 547978
(c) 554978
(d) 735961
Solution: In the given code the alphabets have been coded as follows:
P A I N T E X C L
7 4 1 2 8 9 3 5 6
So, in ACCEPT, A is coded as 4, C as 5, E as 9, P as 7 and T as 8. Hence the correct
code is 455978 and therefore the answer is Choice (a).
➃ MIXED LETTER/NUMBER CODING:
Some messages are given in the coded language and the code for a particular word or
message is asked. To analyze such codes, any two messages bearing a common word
are picked up. The common code number are picked up. Proceed in the similar
fashion by picking up are possible combination of two, the entire message can be
decoded.
Example 5: If ‘tee see pee’ means ‘drink fruit juice’; ‘see kee lee’ means
‘juice is sweet’ and ‘lee ree mee’ means ‘he is intelligent’, which word in that
language means ‘swee’?
(a) see
(b) kee
(c) lee
(d) pee
Solution: In the first and second statement, the common word is ‘juice’ and the
common code word is ‘see’. So, ‘see’ means ‘juice’.
In the second and third statements, the common word is ‘is’ and the common code is
‘lee’. So ‘lee’ means ‘is’. Thus in the second statement, the remaining word ‘sweet’
is coded as ‘kee’. Hence the answer is choice (b).
Example 6: In a certain code, ‘786’ means ‘study very hard’, ‘958’ means ‘hard
work pays’ and ‘645’ means ‘study and work’. Which of the following is the code for
‘very’?
(a) 8
(b) 6
(c) 7
(d) Cannot be determined
Solution: Based on the same logic as used in the above question, the code for ‘very’
can be found out to be ‘7’, hence the answer is choice (c).
➄ Coding decoding questions can also be asked in following types, these types
were recently asked in SBI Exam and it puzzled many students. But if you read the
instructions carefully and practice it, you can easily solve it.
Solution: (a)
∆∆∆○∆∆ = 16+8+4+0+1+0=29
Solution: (c)
○∆○∆○∆○ = 0+16+0+4+0+1+0=21
Conditions:
1) If the first number is a prime and the last number is a composite number then their
codes are to be interchanged.
2) If both the first and the last number is Prime both are to be coded as $.
3) If both the first and the last letters are Composite and in between there are two or
more Prime numbers then Prime numbers are to be coded as A.
4) If the first number is composite and the last number is a prime number, both are to
be coded as the code for the composite number.
7.1. 4, 17, 88, 16, 3
(a) #,K,&,$,#
(b) A,K,&,$,#
(c) A,K,&,$,A
(d) $,K,&,$,$
(e) None of the above.
Solution: (a)
In 4,17,88,16,3 the first number is a composite and last is a prime; so codes will be
according to condition (4).
Solution: (d)
Given set of numbers are 44,11,4,2,8, here both first and last numbers are composite
and there is only one prime number in between them. Hence no condition will apply
and the codes are according to the given symbol table.

logic is applied to decode the code.
(i) The first letter of the code represents the second next letter (according to the
alphabetical series) of the first letter of the word.
(ii) The second part i.e. the numerical part of the code represents the total number of letter
in the word plus one if the total numbers of letters in the word is even and the total number
of letters minus one, if the total number of letters in the word is odd.
