TYPES OF TOURISM

Tourism is a word that refers to the activities involved travels and temporary stay
in any choice of selected destinations. There are so many types of forms of tourism
such as;

Adventure Tourism- is a type of niche tourism involving exploration of travel to


remote areas, where the traveler should expect the unexpected. Adventure tourism is
rapidly growing in popularity as tourist seeks unusual holidays, different from the typical
beach vacation.

It is probably one of the most –well-adventurous. Travelers head to remote,


exotic and possibly hostile areas to explore cultures or activities outside of their comfort
zones.

•It is type of travel that involved adventurous people.

•The activities are challenging, fearless and something risky where the tourist
expects the unexpected.

•Example: Mountaineering, rappelling, skiing, rock climbing, or hunting.

Agritourism- this is a style of vacation in which the traveler normally stays in


farms.

Agritourism

As a type of both foreign and domestic tourism, agritourism involves travel to a


farm or ranch, including farm stays at anything from bed and breakfasts to dude
ranches, procedure purchase from farm stands, corn mazes, wine and cheese making,
and fruit picking, It’s one of the growing forms of tourism in areas including Australia,
Canada the U.S and the Philippines.

Archaeotourism or Archeological Tourism- is an alternative form of cultural


tourism, which aims to promote the passion for historical-archeology and the
conservation of historical sites.
Art Tourism- It’s a type that focuses on having exposure to the different forms of
art like paintings, sculpture and other forms of art.

• activities involved are going to museums, art galleries and theaters.

Atomic Tourism – is a relatively new style of tourism in which the tourists travel
to significant sites in atomic history. These sites are typically those involved with either
atomic explosions or the vehicles (planes, missiles and rockets) that transport them.

Black Tourism of Grief Tourism- involves visiting sites associated with


suffering and death.

Bookstore Tourism- is the type of cultural tourism that promotes independent


bookstores as a group travel destination.

Culinary Tourism –Refers to travel of which the purpose is to pursue unique


and memorable drinking and dining with the locals at the chosen destination.

Cultural Tourism or Heritage Tourism- involves immersion in a society’s


lifestyle, its people’s history, its art and architecture, its religion, and any other elements
that have shaped it and its people. It can also include participation in a culture’s rituals
or festivals (think Anthony Bourdain).

•This is a kind of travel that involved experiencing the different uniqueness,


heritage and special characteristics of the cultural places

•involve appreciation

•Example: Activities are following –visit to the archeological sites, museums,


castles, palaces, historical places arts ruins crafts galleries festivals and many more

Disaster Tourism- which involves visiting areas that have been affected by
floods, hurricanes, volcanoes, and more and inclusive tourism, which is tourism
accessible to the disables.

Domestic Tourism- This refers to travel within national boundary or own


country.

Domestic Tourism

People who travel and stay overnight within the boundaries of their own country
are classified as domestic tourists. Estimates of the size of this sector in the market vary
because in many countries domestic tourism is not adequately measured at present. As
international tourism by a factor of around10:1. In the USA, where good measurement
does exist, Americans take only one trip abroad for every one hundred domestic trips
defined as travel to places more than 100 miles distance from home. Even for longer
visits of over ten nights’ duration, international trips were no more than 3 percent og the
total.

Ecotourism- is travel to fragile, pristine and usually protected areas that strive to
be low impact and (usually) small scale. It helps educate the traveler; provides funds for
conservation; directly benefits the economic development and political empowerment of
local communities; and fosters respect for different cultures and for human rights.

Ecotourism- it is a small scale, low-impact travel to fragile, untouched and


protected areas. This type of domestic and international tourism strives to educate,
provide funds for conservation, benefit economic and political development, and
promote respect for cultures and human rights. A lot of times this involves volunteer
work and the promotion of recycling, energy effiency, water conservation and
implementation of economic opportunities.

Ecotourism is also known as ecological tourist and is a form of tourism that


appeals to the ecologically and socially conscious individuals.

Educational Tourism- it is the kind of tourism of which the purpose is learning


and enriching knowledge. Usually these are students visiting museums, historical
places, religious places and in the natural areas.

Events Tourism- this type of tourism allows the traveler to travel to destination
to attend and have an actual participation in an event like fairs, celebrations, festival,
ritual, ceremonies, birthdays etc.

Extreme Tourism- includes tourism of native societies, ghettos, jungles and


urban areas. It can also include extreme activities such as mountaineering bungee
jumping, rafting, and rock climbing, zip-lining and trekking.

Extreme Tourism or Shock Tourism- is the type of niche tourism involving


travel to dangerous places (mountains, jungles, deserts, caves, etc.) of participation in
dangerous events.

Ethnic Tourism or Ethno Tourism- where travelers observe a country’s native


people without the intent of scientific gain. It is a travel where the travelers choose to
experience the practices of other culture within a community or within a tribal group.

Dark Tourism or Grief Tourism- is tourism involving travel to sites associated


with death and suffering.
Dental Tourism- is a subset of the sector known as medical tourism. It involves
individuals seeking dental care outside of their local healthcare systems.

Disaster Tourism- is the act of travelling to a disaster area as a matter of


curiosity. The behaviour can be a nuisance if it hinders rescue, relief, and recovery
operations.

Drug Tourism- is the travel for the purpose of obtaining or using drugs for
personal use that are unavailable of illegal in one’s home jurisdiction.

Female Sex Tourism- is the travel by the women, partially or fully for the
purpose of having sex.

Garden Tourism- is a type of niche tourism involving visits or travel to botanical


gardens and places which are significant in the history of gardening.

Gay Tourism or LGBT Tourism- is a form of niche tourism marketed to gay


people who are open about their sexual orientation and who wish to travel to gay travel
destinations in order to participate to some extent in the gay life of the destination area

Geotourism- which focuses not just on sustainability but also on enhancing the
area’s character, though not related as much to the environment.

Health Tourism

This is also called medical tourism, this form of tourism describes the practice
of leaving the country to get healthcare, or providers, travelling to deliver, healthcare. It
can be highly dangerous if the quality of treatment is low or the facility isn't accredited,
but includes complex surgeries, cardiac surgery, dental surgery and even cosmetic
surgery. Often in these cases, the providers are practicing outside their area of
expertise or at a lower standard of care.

Nautical Tourism

Another type of tourism which combines sailing and boating with vacationing and
travel. Many of these types of tourists live in their boats and take port in different areas
to explore. It becomes such a popular kind of tourism that marinas have been built
specifically for nautical tourists in Europe, South American and Australia.
