COMPUTER APPLICATIONS IN BUSINESS

Computer and technical skills are required by today’s employees. Students in these MCC
programs will learn to solve business problems using computer software, manage data to
make data-driven decisions, and prepare statistical reports, spreadsheets, presentations,
publications, and web pages. Flexibility is built into the programs so that MCC students have
the opportunity to take medical, legal, accounting, foreign language, or other specialty
electives to enhance their credentials and prepare for a career in one or more specific
industries.

Classes in this area of study also provide support for those interested in updating technology
skills through one or two classes because the need for effective computer skills is essential for
students and workers in all fields.

1. Microsoft Office Certifications

MCC is an approved Microsoft Information Technology (IT) Academy and testing center.
Through state funding, as a part of their classwork, our students are able to earn Microsoft
Office certifications at no additional cost. Benefits of certification include:

 Certify in Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

 Certification is convenient and differentiates you from others in today’s competitive job
market.
 Microsoft research indicates that certification can broaden your employment
opportunities and increase your earning potential, job satisfaction, and competence.
 Certification enables you to complete assignments and projects with greater ease and
efficiency, and it builds self-confidence.
 Certification provides for strong, quality learning standards and leading-edge curriculum.

Certification positions you well as a job candidate, as an indicator of high motivation and productivity.

2. MCC’s Computer Applications Programs

APPLICATIONS OF COMPUTER IN EDUCATION SECTOR

Computers in Education: Computers are helping the teachers in the following areas:

(1) Classification of pupils: Computers help in classification of children according to their abilities and
evaluating their performance.

(2) Preparing time-table: Computers help in preparing time-table, schedules, etc.

(3) Maintenance of progress cards: Computers maintain progress cards and preserve them efficiently
and confidentially.

(4) Tutorial and dialogue: Computer can play effectively the role of the tutor. It helps the teacher in
engaging students in tutorial work. There is tutorial interaction and dialogue.

(5) Immediate feedback: Computers helps the teacher in providing immediate feedback to students for
better interaction and motivation.

(6) Problem-solving and creativity: Computers can be used to develop Problem-solving ability and
creativity among the students.

(7) Laboratory and practical work: Computers can supplement laboratory and practical work
especially in science and technology subject.

(8) Training through stimulate techniques: The computer can be used to give training to the students
through stimulated and gaming techniques.
(9) Education to handicapped: Computers can be used in providing education to handicapped like deaf
and dumb.

(10) Repetition: A lesson if not understood once can be repeated number of times and thoroughly
understood by even an average student. Computer can work according to the tune of the student.

(11) Guidance: Computer helps the teacher in providing information/data for guidance and reference.

Computer can be an excellent teacher. It can impart knowledge without losing temper and getting
impatient. It is enjoyable and can have audio-visual facilities.

COMPUTER APPLICATIONS IN HEALTH CARE

Computer Applications in Health Care Exploring Biotechnology December 2013

1. Computers are EVERYWHERE

• Doctors use computers to record progress notes.
• Nurses use computers to transmit orders to other departments and in patient care
• Pharmacists use computers to order medication and view a patient profile.
• For the most part, ALL HEALTHCARE WORKERS use computers.

2. Information Systems

• Accounting – saves time and money

• Scheduling – appointments
• Monitoring – blood pressure, heartbeat
• Databases – A database is an organized collection of information – Information entered in areas
called fields – Extensive use of databases in biotech
• Confidentiality of patient information must be strictly enforced.
• Access codes and passwords are used.
• Only authorized workers have access to patient information
• Confidentiality- the principle in medical ethics that the information a patient reveals to a health care
provider is private and has limits on how and when it can be disclosed to a third party.
3. Medical Laboratory
• Computers used to analyze DNA – Blood – Urine
• Used to test for disease and genetic disorders
• Can run as many as 500 specimens per hour
4. Electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG)
• Computer provides a printout of electrical activity of patient’s heart
• Computer can also “read” the EKG – tell the reader what the EKG means. This used to be done by
the doctor.
• An EKG can be done at a remote location and sent to a doctor thousands of miles away.
5. Echocardiogram
• Computer directs sound waves into the heart, and then converts the reflection of the waves into an
image of the heart.
• Used to reveal heart problems – valve problems, – defects in the heart wall, etc.
6. Computerized Tomography (CT)
• It’s a computerized body scanner
• Shows cross-section views
• Allows us to see bone and body tissues
• Helps us find tumors
7. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
• It’s a body scanner that uses nuclear magnets instead of x-rays
• Patient is placed in a large, circular magnet that measures the activity of hydrogen ions and
converts it to a picture
• Can see tumors, blood moving through veins
8. Ultrasonography
• Uses high frequency sound waves
• Body parts are viewed on a computer screen and printed on photo paper
• Used during pregnancy
9. Telemedicine
• Includes remote monitoring devices and videoconferencing
• Used to connect specialists to patients in remote locations
• Can transmit information from prisons, an ambulance, and other challenging locations
• Families can watch the care of high-risk newborns that are still in the hospital
10. Bioinformatics
• the use of computers to store, retrieve, analyze or predict the composition or the structure of
biomolecules.
• "Biomolecules" include your genetic material---nucleic acids---and the products of your genes:
proteins.
11. Human Genome Project
• Computers play an important role in the Human Genome Project.
• The goals of the Human Genome Project are: – identify all the approximate 30,000 genes in human
DNA, – determine the sequences of the 3 billion chemical base pairs that make up human DNA, – store
this information in databases, – improve tools for data analysis.
12. Computers in Biotech
• IBM is working on a supercomputer called Blue Gene which may decipher some of the mystery
behind how proteins work.
• “Computational biology," or "bioinformatics," can collect information "without having to do the
experiment” This could make it easier to design drugs because we can make a reasonable prediction
of the structure with a computer.
13. Bioinformatics
• Bioinformatics is the term coined for the new field that merges biology, computer science, and
information technology to manage and analyze data, with the ultimate goal of understanding and
modeling living systems.
