Line A 8 Workers

The document summarizes the process of line balancing for a production line with 16 activities and an expected output of 420 units per day. It determines that 8 workstations are required based on the total task time and cycle time of 1 minute. An algorithm is used to assign activities to each workstation based on activity time and precedence relationships between tasks. The resulting line balancing shows bottlenecks at workstations 3 and 8, limiting the overall production capacity to 360 units per day, less than the target of 420 units.

In order meet the production, the cycle time must be:

C= (Total working hrs)/No of output units

= (7*60*60)/420=60 seconds=1 mins

Minimum no of work stations required = (total time of tasks)/ (time

required) =480/60=8 workstations.

So here we are considering hiring one extra worker for line A.

To do line balancing and the appropriate distribution of activities. First

let us arrange the activities in their decreasing order of activity time.
Immediate
Activity Activity Time predecessor
2 50 none
4 50 1
13 50 9
14 50 10
3 40 1
10 40 9
16 40 8,12
1 30 none
12 30 7
5 20 2
8 20 2
11 20 7
6 10 3
7 10 4,5
9 10 6
15 10 11
Table 1

Now we will start making the organization structure for line-A for 8
workers.

We will use the following algorithm:

a) Activities should be assigned to the workstations in order of

longest activity time (more the activity time more preferentially it
will be assigned). Table 1 can be used to get an idea of activity
time.
b) No activity shall be assigned if its predecessor (listed in table 1
above) is not assigned earlier.
c) Total activity time (for a workstation) preferably should not be
greater than the cycle time (i.e. 60 seconds for this situation.)
d) If a situation arises where few activities are left even after
sequentially following a) b) & c) and all workstations have at least
one activity, then the remaining activities will be assigned such
that the distribution of cycle time overshoot is uniform.

To begin with let us first frame the following table:

Work Stations Activity Time Taken Total Time
1
2
3
4
5
6
7
8

We scan table 1 from top to bottom we see the first entry is of

activity 2 with max cycle time of 50 s.It is entered corresponding
to station 1.
Now the total time must be less than 60s so we have 10s of time
left but we cannot assign, say, activity 6 here as activity 3 precedes
it, which is not yet completed so by Step b) 10 s spare is given in
workstation 1.
So the table now becomes,
Work Stations Activity Time Taken Total Time
1 2 50 50
2
3
4
5
6
7
8
Going so on we see the next entry for workstation 2 will be 1 as
for all other activities the previous activity is not yet complete.
So after assigning 1 we have
Work Stations Activity Time Taken Total Time
1 2 50 50
2 1 30

3
4
5
6
7
8
Now we have 30 seconds of spare time so some other activity can
be assigned in this we see activity 5 which follows both rule b) and
c)
Work Stations Activity Time Taken Total Time
1 2 50 50
2 1 30 50
5 20
3
4
5
6
7
8
So if we go on
Work Stations Activity Time Taken Total Time
1 2 50 50
2 1 30
5 20 50
3 4 50
6 10

4 3 40
8 20 60
5 9 10
13 50 60
6 10 40
11 20 60
7 14 50
15 10 60
8 12 30

We see activity 7 and 16 are not yet defined. So by Rule d) we have

Total Production
Work Stations Activity Time Taken(in sec) Time(sec) Capacity(max)(unit/day)
1 2 50 50 504
2 1 30
5 20 50 504
3 4 50
6 10
7 10 70 360
4 3 40
8 20 60 420
5 9 10
13 50 60 420
6 10 40
11 20 60 420
7 14 50
15 10 60 420
8 12 30
16 40 70 360
We see the design of the activities is such that in order to
accommodate all tasks we have a bottleneck for workstation 3
and 8.
So the bottle neck will be 360 units/day, which is less than
targeted value of 420 units/day.
