Deflected Profile of A Beam

This document provides instructions for an experiment to determine the deflected profile of a simply supported beam when a load is applied at various points. Students are asked to apply a load to the beam at known locations, measure the deflection of the beam at select points before and after loading using a dial gauge, record the observations in a table, and plot the deflected shape of the beam. They then compare the experimental curve to the theoretical curve and discuss any discrepancies. The objectives are to understand beam deflection behavior and verify theoretical mechanics concepts.

LABORATORY ASSIGNMENT

Experiment:

DETERMINATION OF DEFLECTED PROFILE OF A BEAM

L L
APPARATUS: 2 2
B A
 Weights

 Hanger
Load (P)
 Dial gauge Deflection
at the
 Scale
centre
 Vernier calliper

THEORY:

Clerk-Maxwell’s reciprocal theorem in its simplest form states that deflection of any point ‘A’ of any
elastic structure due to load ‘P’ at any point ‘B’ is same as the deflection of beam at point ‘B’ due to
same load applied at ‘A’.

PROCEDURE
Step1- Load is applied to the beam at known locations from the centre of the simply supported
span.
Step2- Measure the deflection of the beam at selected locations by means of a dial gauge
before and after loading and determine the deflection before and after at each point
separately.
Step3- Now move the load along the beam to the selected another location and for each
position of the load, the deflection of the centre point was measured. This deflection
should be measured at each such point before and after the loading, separately.
Step4- Plot the graph between deflection as ordinate and position of point on abscissa. These
are the line ordinates for deflection of the beam.

RESULTS:
Plot the deflected shape of the beam.

DISCUSSION:

Compare this experimentally determined deflection curve of the beam with theoretical
deflection curve and discuss the reasons for discrepancies, if any.
