GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
 All questions are compulsory.
 The question paper consists of 17 questions divided into three sections A, B and C. Section A comprises of 07
questions of one mark each, section B comprises of 06 questions of four marks each and section C comprises
of 04 questions of six marks each.
 All questions in Section A are to be answered in one word, one sentence or as per the exact requirement of the
question.
 There is NO step marking.
 There is no overall choice. However, internal choice has been provided in 02 questions of four marks each and
03 questions of six marks each. You have to attempt only one of the alternatives in all such questions.
 Use of calculators is not permitted. You may ask for logarithmic tables, if required.

SECTION (B) : (4 Marks)
8. For a thin prism placed in air of prism angle A and refractive index n, prove that minimum angle of deviation
is given by min = (n – 1) A [4 Marks]
9. What is lateral displacement due to parallel slab of thickness 't' for a ray of light incident at an angle i, and
refracted in slab at an angle r . [4 Marks]
10. A right prism is to be made by selecting a proper material and the angle A
and B (B  A), as shown in figure. It is desired that a ray of light incident
normally on AB emerges parallel to the incident direction after two internal
reflections. [2 + 2 = 4 Marks]
(a) What should be the minimum refractive index  for this to be possible?
(b) For  = 5/3, is it possible to achieve this with the angle A equal to 60 degrees?
11. A beam of light is converging towards a point on a screen. a plane parallel plate of glass is introduced in the
path of this converging beam. How will the point of convergence be shifted ? Draw the ray diagram and also
find the value of shift in point of convergence. [4 Marks]
12. Use the mirror equation to deduce that:
(a) an object placed between f and 2f of a concave mirror produces a real image beyond 2f.
(b) a convex mirror always produces a virtual image independent of the location of the object.
(c) the virtual image produced by a convex mirror is always diminished in size and is located
between the focus of and the pole.
(d) an object placed between the pole and focus of a concave mirror produces a virtual and enlarged
image. [4 Marks]
OR
Answer the following questions : [4 Marks]
(a) A man holding a candle in front of a thick glass mirror and viewing it obliquely and he observes
a number of images of the candle. What is the origin of these multiple images?
(b) You read a newspaper because of the light that it reflects. Then why do you not see even a faint
image of yourself in the newspaper?
(c) You have learnt that plane and convex mirror produce virtual image of object. Can they produce
real images under some circumstances? Explain.
(d) The wall of a room is covered with a perfect plane mirror, and two movie films are made, one
recording the movement of a man and the other of his mirror image. From viewing the films
later, can an outside tell which is which ?
