Homework 2

This document contains 5 questions from a homework assignment on electric power networks. Question 1 asks about isolation transformers and how they protect from electrical shock. Question 2 asks if a 3-phase load can be served by three 1-phase transformers from given specifications. Question 3 asks to find equivalent circuits relating voltages for a non-standard transformer connection. Question 4 analyzes voltages and currents in a standard step-down transformer connection. Question 5 asks to draw an impedance diagram for a system shown in a one-line diagram.

Homework 02 Course: Electric Power Networks

Term: Summer 2019

Instructor: Dr. Shafayat Abrar

Q1: Investigate the operation and configuration of Isolation Transformer, and

with the aid of circuit diagram, explain how it can protect a human subject from
getting an electrical shock.
Q2. A 10-MVA 3 load is to be served by a 3 transformer bank at a (line-line)
voltage of 13.8 kV. The supply-side (line-line) voltage is 138 kV. Various 1
transformers are available in the warehouse but all have windings with voltage
ratings under 100 kV and current ratings under 250 A.
(a) Is it possible to serve the load using only three 1 transformers?
(b) If so, specify the 3 connection and the low- and high-voltage ratings of
the 1 transformers.
Q3. The transformers shown in Figure 1. are labeled in a nonstandard manner.
Assume that the 1 transformers are ideal, each with voltage gain , and find
the positive sequence per phase equivalent circuit relating Va’n’ to Van

Figure 1.

Q4: We are given the standard step-down connection shown in Figure 2.

Assume that the voltage sources are positive-sequence with Vab = 13.8 kV∠0° .
The transformer banks are made up of l transformers: Xeq1 = 1.0 , N1/N2 = 10.
3𝜙
(a) Find Ia , Ia’ , Va’n’ , and 𝑆load using the per phase equivalent circuit of Figure 2.
(b) Repeat part (a) but neglect the connection-induced phase shifts in Figure 2.
(c) Compare the results in parts (a) and (b).

Q5: Draw an impedance diagram for the system whose one-line diagram is
shown in Figure 3. The 3 and line-line ratings are as follows:

Generator G: 15 MVA, 13.8 kV, X = 0.15 p.u.

Motor M1: 5 MVA, 13.8 kV, X = 0.15 p.u.
Motor M2: 5 MVA, 14.4 kV, X = 0.15 p.u.
T1: 25 MVA, 13.2 / 161 kV, X = 0.1 p.u.
T2: 15 MVA, 161 / 13.8 kV, X = 0.1 p.u.
Line: j100  (actual)

Select a base of 100 MVA and 161 kV in the transmission line.
