Chapter 1

The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

As a Hospitality Management student is there a need to require to

speak English only? Some has a violent reaction, some doesn’t react. As

a Hospitality Management student we need to practice speaking English

fluently.

English is the most spoken language in the world. It is commonly

used in America, Europe and Asia particularly in New Zealand, United

Kingdom, United States, Australia, Canada, Ireland and even in Liberia,

Nigeria, South Africa and even in the Philippines. At this moment English

language plays an important role in communicating. English is a West

Germanic language that was first spoken in early medieval England and

eventually became a global language.

Many people can speak and understand English, based on the book

"English Worldwide" written by Professor David Crystal in 2006 an

estimated 1 billion people worldwide can speak in English, that there

were approximately 400 million native speakers of English. In addition,

Crystal said that there were 400 million speakers of English as a second

language. Furthermore, there were around 600 - 700 million English as


a foreign language speakers. Those figures are also almost 12 years

ago, so we can surely say that those numbers of speakers have grown.

On top of this, 67 countries have English as their official language and

there are 27 countries that have English as their secondary official

language.

A lot of countries or even places here in the Philippines grew up

speaking in English especially those people in Visayas. English language

has been commonly known as universal language in the world, English

is the most use language that people use to communicate or interact.

Therefore, nowadays many people especially students that sooner will

become successful tries to speak or master English language. No matter

what career path a person decided to pursue, learning English is a

valuable skill. Many professionals use English Language for it is

somehow helpful because it can be easily understood for it serves as our

universal language, it's easy to communicate these days because of this.

The world is continuously developing so the use of English as a

language is a must or important especially for those who take the course

of Hospitality and Tourism Management. Requiring the students of

Hospitality Management to speak English can help them to establish

their communication skills, requiring to fluently speak foreign language

is one of the helpful idea because it will be an advantage for the students

so they can communicate to other nationalities. It can be a way to


properly give the service that the guest or customer needs. You can

easily understand and have negotiations with different clients and

guests using this language

Nowadays speaking English is not really a new especially for those

students who occasionally and accustomed to speak it fluently but it’s

only a few because almost all of the freshmen students struggle to speak

one somehow because we already have our own language and dialects

that we used to speak.

People often wants to know the best language to learn to get ahead

in life. In entering Hospitality and Tourism Management learning English

Language is the best option, to have an advantage in the job that you

are applying. Some school requiring all the students to speak in English

to improve their capability and be prepared to speak more fluently in

the future.
