Semi Detailed Lesson Plan

MAPEH 9

I-Objectives:
At the end of the lesson students are expected to:
a. Demonstrate correct hand signals of referees in basketball
b. Exhibit quick/sharp judgment calls while officiating a game; and
C. Realize the value of high level fitness in sports officiating.
II-Subject Matter
Topic: Sports Officiating (Synchronized Hand Signals)
Reference: Physical Education and Health Grade 9 pp. 27-28
Materials: Visual materials hand signals of referee in basketball , pictures, Whistle, Flashcards, Lop Top,
Speaker & Pentelpen
III-Learning Activities
A. Preparation
1. Prayer
2. Attendance
3. Review:
The teacher will ask questions from the previous lesson.
B. Motivation:
The teacher and students will perform a warm up exercise using some hand signals in basketball and
volleyball games.
1. What can you say about our warm up exercise this morning?
2. What are the movements of our hands all about?
3. What do you think the movements of our hands represent?
C. Lesson Proper:
1.The teacher will introduce and post the picture on the board about hand signals in basketball game.
 Let the students read the different picture.
 The teacher demonstrate another hand signals used in reporting a foul to the scorer’s table
from the number of each player.
Group Activity
 The teacher will divide the class into 2 groups. Select a leader per group to draw lot.
 Each group are given 5 minutes to master the hand signals.
 In group formation, you will be given of 5 flashcards to indicate the hand signals to be
executed in synchrony by your opponents group. Upon whistle is given, the opponents group
execute the given hand signal written in the flashcards, then freeze for 2 to 3 seconds.
 3 points will be given to correctly, timely performed hand signal.
 The group with most points, win the game.

D. Analysis/Processing Questions:
1. What went well? What went wrong?
2. Why is there a need to give precise and immediate calls when officiating a game?
3. What limits an officiating official from giving precise and immediate calls?
4. How can one improve his or her officiating skills in terms of precision and immediacy?.

E. Abstraction
1. Who are you here, who love in sports? Who only wants to officiate basketball game or any other
game?
2. If you’re given a chance to become a referee in basketball game , how did you maintain the
flow of the game?
F. Application/ Differentiated:

1. Group Activity:
 The teacher divide the class into 3.Each group has given a different task to do.
 1.Group 1-Perform a dance using loco motor with the combination of some hands signal in
basketball as your axial movement skills perform it with music. Do it each for 8 measures in
2/4 time signature.
 2.Group 2-Draw a picture of your Ideal officiating official .Discuss it in from of your
classmates. Why you say so?
 3. Group 3- Answer the following questions
1. What are the specific fitness components that you are going to develop as a referee.
2. Why we need to develop a high level of fitness in sports officiating?

IV- Evaluation:
Short Quiz.
Identify the following hand signals.

V. Assignment:
1. Read page 56 to 57 from our learner’s materials and answer activity number 2.

Last meeting we discuss about qualities of an officiating official which is very important in
managing a game.
1.What are those qualities of an officiating official?
2. What will happened if one of the officiating official were not able to perform his job because
they lack of knowledge about the game?
3. How knowledge and skills is important to manage a game?
Impt. For the success of the game.
 Motivation:
Dance exercise.
1. What can you say about our warm up exercise this morning?
2. What are the movements of our hands all about?
3. What do you think the movements of our hands represent
4. Where have you seen this arm movement (the teacher show an action)
5.It is in the market? Or in the street? where the traffic enforcer control the traffic?
6. Ok. You can see this one in the Gymnasium where there is a tournament of basketball
made.
C. Lesson Proper:
The role of an official is very crucial in a sporting endeavor. He defines the success of
failure of a certain physical activity. It is therefore necessary for an aspiring officiating to
posses a number of qualities for him to meet the goal of having a satisfying, complain-free,
impartial, and successful game.
This morning we are going to perform a synchronized hand signals to give precise and
immediate calls when officiating a game which is very important for the smooth flow of the
game.
