Phonological awareness is ones understanding and awareness

of the sound structures used to create words. Phonological


awareness encompasses several abilities including:
1) The ability to identify, recognize, and use the sounds
in spoken language
2) The ability to recognize and identify syllables
3) The ability to identify rhyming words

Phonemic awareness is a subset of phonological awareness; it


encompasses several abilities including:
1) The ability to listen and hear different phonemes
2) The ability to separate words into phonemes
3) The ability to combine phonemes to create a single
word

Phonics is a method used to teach reading and writing skills by


developing phonological and phonemic awareness. This method
improves reading and writing by helping student identify the
relationship between sounds and spelling patterns.
