This document describes a regenerative braking system for electric vehicles which combines conventional hydraulic braking force with regenerative braking force applied through the electric motors. The system controls braking in two forms, serial braking and parallel braking, to optimize braking force distribution between the regenerative and hydraulic systems depending on driving conditions. A model is developed to calculate and simulate the braking force distribution which can improve energy recovery and braking stability of electric vehicles.
