Philippines Watershed

This document provides information about watersheds in the Philippines and how to delineate watershed boundaries. It lists several major watersheds in the Philippines and describes two methods for delineating watersheds - automatic delineation using a digital elevation model and manual delineation by examining topographic maps. The document outlines the steps for manually delineating a watershed, which involves locating the water body, tracing its tributaries, examining contour lines to determine slope and elevation changes, marking break points, and connecting break points to create the watershed boundary. It also discusses why watershed delineation is important and some tools that can be used.

PHILIPPINE WATERSHED

Watershed- a high area of land where rain collects, some of it flowing down to supply rivers, lakes, etc., at lower levels.
-an area of land on a slope which drains its water into a stream and its tributaries.
-It also called as catchment area or drainage basin.

Philippine Watershed

Angat in Bulacan
Buhi-Barit in Albay and Camarines Sur
Caliraya Lumot in Laguna
Lake Lanao Agus River in Lanao del Norte
Magat in Ifugao, Isabela, and Nueva Viscaya
Makiling Banahaw in Batangas
Pantabangan-Carranglan in Aurora
Pulangi in Bukidnon
San Roque in Pangasinan
Tiwi in Albay
Upper Agno River in Benguet

Delineation- All watershed delineation means is that you’re drawing lines on a map to identify a watershed’s boundaries.
These are typically drawn on topographic maps using information from contour lines. Contour lines are lines of equal
elevation, so any point along a given contour line is the same elevation.

Two Methods of Delineating a Watershed

- DEM Based or Automatic Delineation
- Water flows downhill.
- Grid cell based approach.
- Boundaries created automatically by computer.
- Manual Delineation
- Drawing watersheds by clicking on the map.
- Requires underlying data for accuracy.

How to Delineate a Watershed Manually?

Locate- Locate the river, lake, stream, wetland, or other water bodies of interest.
Trace- Trace the watercourse from its source to its mouth including the tributaries.
Examine- Examine the drawn lines in the topographic map that are near the watercourse.
Contour lines- Contour lines spaced very close together indicate dramatic changes.
Check- Check the slope of the landscape by locating two adjacent contour lines and determine their respective elevations.

Break points- Mark the break points surrounding the water body and determine the direction of drainage in the area.
Connect- Connect the break points with a line following the highest elevations in the area.
Boundary- Creating a boundary that represents the contributing area for a particular control point or outlet.

Why do we Delineate a Watershed?

So that we could characterize and investigate what is going on in one portion of the study area versus another.

Basins Delineation Tools

• DEM Based (Automatic Delineation)
-DEM and NED grids
• Manual Delineation
From existing watershed boundaries and stream layers
