ALGEBRA TEST

1. The ratio of the height of two buildings is 7 to 5. The first building is 210 feet tall.
How tall is the second building?

ANSWER: 150 FEET

REASON: 7: 5 = 210: x
5/x = 210/7
5/X = 30
X =30*5
X = 150

2. Joe’s current age is five times Mary’s age ten years ago. If Mary is currently m years old,
what is Joe’s current age in terms of m?

ANSWER: 5m – 50
REASON: Mary’s age 10 yrs ago = m – 10 (m preceeds Mary as Joe
is older)
Joe is 5x older = 5(m-10)
Total = 5m – 50

3. Find x: x + 9 = 18 - 2x

ANSWER: 3
REASON: x + 9 = 18 -2x
x + 2x = 18 - 9
3x = 9
x = 9/3
x=3

4. Evaluate: x4 − y if x = 3 and y = −20

ANSWER: 101
REASON: x4 – y (substitute the value of x and y to the number given)
34 – (-20)
81 – (-20)
81 + 20
101

5. If X equals 5, what is the value of 6X + 2X - X?

ANSWER: 35
REASON: Substitute x with 5
6 (5) + 2 (5) – 5
30 + 10 – 5
40 – 5
35
6. Solve X where 5X = 20.

ANSWER: 4
REASON: 5X = 20
X = 20/5
X=4

7. 6x - 10 = 4(x + 3). Solve for x.

ANSWER: X = 11
REASON: 6X – 10 = 4(X + 3)
6X – 10 = 4X + 12
6X – 4X = 10 + 12
2X = 22
X = 22/2
X = 11

8. Irene is N years old. If Tom is twice as old, which of the following algebraic statements
shows his age now?

ANSWER: 2N

9. Solve for x: 2(x+7)-3(2x-4)=-18

ANSWER: X = 11
REASON: 2 (X+7) – 3(2X – 4) = -18
(2X +14) – (6X – 12) = -18
4X + 26 = -18
4X = (-18) – 28
4X = 46
X = 46/4
X = 11

10. Solve the following inequality: -20<4-2x

ANSWER: 12> X
REASON: -20 < 4 – 2X
-20 = 4 - 2X
-20 - 4 = 2X
24 = 2X
24/2 = X
12 > X (12 is higher than x )

11. Multiply: (2x+5)(3x² - 2x - 4)

ANSWER: 6x3 + 11x2 +18x - 20

REASON: (2x+5)(3x² - 2x - 4) = [multiply 2x and 5 to 3x²,2x and 4 separately)
[remember to add the superscripts]
(6x – 4x + 8x) + (15x – 10x – 20)
3 2 2

6x3 + 11x2 – 2x – 20

12. Simplify (2x2 + 2x - 12) / (x - 2)

ANSWER: 2X + 6
REASON: (2x2 + 2x - 12) / (x - 2)
4 + 2X -12 / X – 2
2X – 8 / X – 2
2X + 6
13. Which of the following is not a grouping symbol?
a. Bars
b. ARROWS
c. Parenthesis
d. Braces

14. Solve: (3x + 4y)(2x + 5y) = ?

ANSWER: (3x + 4y) (2x +5y)

REASON: Use the FOIL Method (multiply the First two terms (3x and 2x), followed
by the Outer terms (4y and 5y) , then the Inner two terms (4y and 2x) and the Last
two terms (3x and 5y),then make a summation)
6x2 + 20y2 + 8xy + 15xy
6x2 + 23xy + 20y2

15. Simplify: (-3a²b²)(4a⁵b³)³

ANSWER: -192a17b11
REASON: (-3a2b2) (64a15b9)
-192a17b11

16. Solve for X: 3(x + 1) = 5(x − 2) + 7

ANSWER: 3
REASON: 3(x + 1) = 5(x − 2) + 7
3x + 3 = 5x – 10 + 7
3x + 3 = 5x – 3
3x + 6 = 5x
6 = 5x – 3x
2x = 6
X = 6/2
X=3

17. A father gave $500 to his two sons. He gave X dollars to one son. What is the correct
expression that shows the amount he gave to the other.

ANSWER: 500 – X
18. Solve for x: 5x + 4x + 7 = x + 15

ANSWER: 1
REASON: 5x + 4x + 7 = x + 15
9x + 7 = x + 15
9x - x = 15 – 7
8x = 8
X = 8/8
X=1

19. The length of a rectangle is 3 times its width. If the width of the rectangle is 5 inches,
what is the rectangle's area, in square inches?

ANSWER: 75 in2
REASON: 5 x 5 = 25
25 x 3 = 75

20. Given f(x)=5x-4, find the value of x if f(x)=31

ANSWER: 7
REASON: f(x)=5x-4
31 = 5x – 4
5x = 31 + 4
5x = 35
X = 35/5
X=7

21. Express this expression into decimal 4 x 10⁵

ANSWER: 400,000

22. Express this expression into scientific notation 0.0012345

ANSWER: 1.2345 X 10-3

23. Find x: 3x+42=2(3x+9)

ANSWER: 8
REASON: 3x+42=2(3x+9)
3x + 42 = 6x + 18
6x – 3x = 42 – 18
3x = 24
X = 24/3
X=8
