PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION

Communication is “the exchange of information and the expression of feeling that can
result in understanding” (Cambridge Dictionary, 1995).

Types of Communication

There are two basic types of communication: verbal and non-verbal. Verbal
communication is the interaction in which sounds (oral) or words (written) are used to relay a
message. Non-verbal communication, on the other hand, is the interaction where behavior
(gestures, facial expressions, etc.) is used to convey and represent meanings.

Elements of Communication

The communication process involves elements like sender, message, encoding,

channel, decoding, receiver and feedback. To understand further, here’s a representation:

- sender/source - the person who intends to convey the message with the intention of
passing information and ideas to others
- message - the subject matter of the communication; can be verbal or non-verbal
- encoding - the process of taking an idea or mental image, associating that image with
words, and then speaking those words in order to convey a message
- channel - the medium through which communication is transmitted (oral or written)
- decoding - the reverse process of listening to words, thinking about them, and turning
those words into mental images
- receiver - the person who receives the message or for whom the message is meant for
- feedback - the process of ensuring that the receiver has received the message and
understood in the same sense as sender meant it

The communication process is not always smooth, there are barriers (noise is the most
common) that hinder or interrupt communication in which the sender must overcome by using
repetition or non-verbal cues (gestures).

Communication is a process of using verbal and non-verbal cues to express yourself

and exchange ideas or information to a person which results to understanding. It is a dynamic
process since it depends on the nature of human consciousness. It is also a two-way process
that requires feedback from the receiver based from the sender. Communication can’t succeed
if there is no exchange or understanding that happened.
