Research Proposal
Research Proposal
Gas Turbine is used in many applications for instance in powerplants, aviation and
marine applications. The increase of turbine rotor inlet temperature affect the the thermal
efficiency and power output. On other hand, for modern aircraft gas turbine the compressor
pressure ratio is up to 40 times the compression ratio, which is the turbine would need higher
turbine inlet temperature with the same amount of hotter cooling air from high pressure
compressor. Thus the temperature needed to be maintained to not exceed the melting point of
the turbine blade. The suitable cooling system needed to be used to meet the requirement while
the performance of the turbine must be considered. Not only the temperature need to be
considered, but also the rotary stall that happens when the turbine rotates with high rpm. In this
proposal the investigation of the correlation cooling method used and the rotary stall will be
done using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
The importance of the gas turbine cooling has long been recognized and being
developed by the industry. The main aim in design the cooling system is to obtain the highest
overall cooling effectiveness with the lowest possible drawbacks on the thermodynamic cycle
performance. The improvement of the efficiency by rising the firing temperature of the turbine.
One way to overcome this problem is using thermal barrier coating. Another method used is
by turbine inlet air cooling. The ambient air density is related to the dry bulb temperature and
the output of the gas turbine depends on the mass flow. Ambient air affects the air flow, output,
heat rate and exhaust temperature. The air flow of rotating turbine blade changes each time and
also occurs the three dimensional separation which lead into horseshoe vortex and make the air
flow become irregular and separate earlier. If the flow is separated earlier and only leaves the
wake, it could make the heat transfer worse and the cooling of the turbine cannot meet its
requirement. It also make high level of vibration that can lead to the destruction of the blade.
In this proposal, it is necessary to investigate the influence and the correlation of the rotary stall
and the heat transfer rate of the turbine cooling with evaporative cooler and fogging system.
More specifically, the following research question need to be addressed :
1. How is the influence of the rotary stall toward the heat transfer rate?
2. Is there any different effect in evaporative and fogging system with the influence of
rotary stall?
3. What is the minimum thickness of the thermal barrier using CFD method?
4. What turbulence model suitable for the swirl and horse shoe vortex prediction?
METHODOLOGY
At first for this study, the literature review and choosing the geometry. In the next stage
for this study, find the validation for the numerical modelling being generated also make the
preliminary study with meshing. Finally the turbulence model will be tested and result for this
study will be the temperature of the surface, convection heat transfer coefficient, the vortex
shedding of the rotational motion, the minimum thickness of the thermal barrier and the
comparison between thermal barrier cooling and the turbine inlet cooling also the comparison
between evaporative and fogging method and the effect of horseshoe vortex on the cooling
method.
