Learning Competency:
Describe changes in materials based on the effect of temperature:
. (S3MT-Ih-j-4)
Topic:
What Happens when a Candle Wax is heated or cooled?
(solid to liquid and vice versa)
Objectives:
After the activity, Pupils will be able to:
1. describe the candle wax when heated and cooled; and
2. appreciate the heating and cooling process in materials.

Melt Down!
Task 1: Review
What can you say about the temperature of the material when
heat is added to it? (Increases)
What can you say about the temperature of the material when heat
is removed from it? (Decreases)
What is the difference in temperature of tap water and cold water? (Tap
water has its normal room temperature while cold water has a lower
temperature)
Task 2: Groupings
Divide the pupils into small groups. Give them the materials and other
necessary instructions in accomplishing the task (time limit in doing the
activity, group output reporting/output presentation).

1. Do not taste materials if not told to do so.
2. Tie back long hair.
3. Wash hands before and after the activity.
4. Refrain from running and jumping.
5. Do not touch any hot materials.
6. Do not play with flame/fire.
7. Handle breakable materials carefully.
8. Carefully handle pointed materials like knife and scissors.
9. CLAYGO.
LAS – Matter
Melt Down!
I. Objective
After the activity, Pupils will be able to:
describe what happens to a candle wax when heated and cooled.
II. Materials
small piece of candle wax big spoon
thick cloth/cooking gloves/pot holder candle
match
III. Procedure
1. Let the pupils do the activity.
. a. Put a small piece of candle wax in the spoon. Use cooking
gloves in the handle of the spoon or wrap the handle with a thick
cloth.
d. Heat the spoon with candle wax for 5 minutes. Observe what
happens to the candle wax.
e. Remove the spoon with candle wax from the lighted candle.
f. Wait for a few minutes until the candle wax cools off. Observe
what happens.
5. What is the effect of removing the heat from the candle wax?
When heat is removed or when the material is cooled, the melted
candle wax becomes solid again.
V. Conclusion
What Happens when a Candle Wax is heated or cooled?
Heat causes a change in the appearance of the material. Initially,
the candle wax is
solid in form, but when heat is added, it melts. It changes from solid
to liquid.

Task 5: Abstraction
When heat is lost from a substance the particles move slower. The
motion of the particles increases when the temperature increases. ... Heat
energy transfers from high temperature matter to low temperature matter.
Heat can affect matter by causing it to change state.
Task 6: Application
A butter/margarine is put in a frying pan over the stove for a few
minutes. What do you think will happens to the butter/margarine?
