Chapter I
Introduction
At the beginning of the modern era a lot of challenges happened to the masses, it’s either
an asset or a drawback to our lives. Gadgets and other state-of-the art devices serve as not only a
source of entertainment and communication but also as a tool in an easy accessible life. Thus, as
students we can contribute to society by exploring this experiment in which we will generate
electricity through the extract of Capsicum annuum.
By inquisitiveness on how to help our world in resolving our problems regarding power
supply, the researchers had stated their project that is profitable and applicable. This research was
conducted to determine the ability of Capsicum annuum extract to generate electricity and revive
dead batteries and to be placed inside an improvised power bank. The fact that Capsicum annuum
is the most familiar and extensively cultivated chili specie both commercially and in home gardens,
is why we decided to conduct this project in the first place for the product is easily attained in
market places and in local gardens.
One thing that mobile phone owners usually complain about is the battery life of their
device. If your battery isn't charging properly, don't immediately assume your phone charger or
your battery is broken. Poor battery life may be the cause of the device itself having been used for
almost a decade or so, some mobile phone batteries tend to lose their original battery performance
overtime, thus making excessive battery consumption a certain factor. Battery death starts the
second they leave the factory. It's unavoidable and irreversible, and in lithium ion batteries, can
totally destroy even a rarely used, mildly charged battery in as little as a few years. With constant
use (and abuse), a lithium ion's lifespan can be under two years-less—if losing more than a third of
its capacity counts as death. Knowing that batteries work using a chemical process, it's reasonable
to expect some degradation. After all, no chemical reaction is perfect, and all result in some kind
of energy loss, often producing unwanted results or substances. Batteries are no different.

The purpose of this research is to find out which of the 2 Capsicum annuum; Jalapeno and
Paprika extract can effectively revive dead batteries in an improvised power bank.
1. Is there any significant difference between the Jalapeno and Paprika in terms of voltage it
can supply in reviving dead batteries?
2. What is the type of Capsicum annuum that can best revive a dead battery?
3. Can the revived dead battery be used for an improvised power bank?
Hypothesis
The significance of this study is for the benefit of the general public with concerns
to the validity of electrical power in a minimum voltage battery.
To the students, this study is profitable. They can conduct experiments through
their school by the guidance of their teachers. They can provide the materials easily.
To the researchers, this study is applicable. This study could help them to
discover a lot and they can apply it to their daily lives.
To the parents, this study can help them for not buying some expensive
equipment. It also helps them to save money from buying batteries.
To the teachers, this study will help them to propagate their knowledge to a lot
of students.
For farmers, our project will provide a double beneficiary purpose for

once our project succeeds because it will require at least a kilo of Capsicum annuum to
recharge a battery and the other is that the farmers themselves can generate enough
electricity for their own personal needs with the right knowledge regarding our project
Conceptual Framework
Power bank is assembled by college students with AA batteries and control circuit, and
exhibited in CES 2001 first. At that time, the battery has short cycle life and big size. Power bank
seems as a new-born because the manufacturing technology of battery is immature, especially to
mini-sized battery-cell, is still blank. Efficient market has not been formed in China though many
renowned corporations involve in promoting power bank. Second, 2004-2006, The Phase of
Market Concept Huaqi formally launched latest power bank, “Engine Compartment”. It seemed
this industry started reviving while brands like “Aigo” and “Anytone” come up. After a year, the
developing technologies eventually made up the rudiment of power bank. It has management
circuit, IC, applicable battery and related basic technologies. Industry did start rising. However
domestic market is still at preliminary stage. Many companies turn to foreign trade. 2005,
HELOIDEO set up and initiated foreign businesses. Third, 2006-2007, Developing Market More
and more famous OEM companies got involved in and then advanced the development of power
bank market. Power bank is recognized gradually.
As an independent item, power bank finally got into people’s eyes. Fourth, 2007-2009
2007 Apple launched fashion iPhone with powerful functions, which stunned mobile phone
market. However the battery of iPhone couldn’t be disassembled and changed by consumers, and
could only work for 4 hours before recharging. Thus iPhone users became the largest target of
power bank. At this phase there were about fifty brands. Fifth, 2009-2012, Growing Market
Power bank market grew very fast.
There existed more than 500 brands. The amount of HELOIDEO reached a new level of
40 million dollars and increased by 20% per year. HELOIDEO dedicates to innovation of
products like car battery charger and best power bank charger that improve people’s mobile life
and do bests to present impressive items to everyone.

This study was started by gathering information regarding the availability of the materials
such as dead batteries, capsicum annuum, wire, battery holder, and syringe. This also tackled
capabilities of the materials it can accommodate for the entire testing together with the feasibility
of an improvised power bank from dead batteries using capsicum annuum. The figure below
shows the paradigm of the study on the construction of the project.
This study aims to prove that Capsicum annuum or Chili extract can generate enough
electricity to revive dead batteries and use it in an improvised power bank. In the course of
producing an improvised power bank, we used alternative materials in order to familiarize
ourselves with the components of our own product and to enhance it in any way we can. All
procedures in the course of the study were performed at Abalos Bukid on June 25 2016 and will
end supposedly on August 2016. The material we used in this research was Batteries, Capsicum
Extracts, Blender, Syringe, Pusher, Electrical Tape and Gloves. We come to up with this research
by asking some teachers and students from other schools. Isn’t capable of fully charging a mobile
and has a limit on how long it can last.

Capsicum annuum
It is a species of the plant genus Capsicum native to southern North America and
northern South America. The species contains a vast variety of shapes and sizes of peppers, both
mild and hot, ranging from bell peppers to chili peppers. Hot or spicy peppers and chillies,
herbaceous plant belonging to the genus Capsicum (family: Solanaceae), are the most popular
food additives that are widely utilised in many parts of the world. Although the species name
annuum means “annual” (from the Latin annus “year”), the plant is not an annual and in the
absence of winter frosts can survive several seasons and grow into a large shrub that lives up to
more than two years. Capsicum annuum (1997).
To answer the question of how chili extract can generate electricity, a battery consists of
two different conductors immersed in an electrolyte. An electrolyte is any fluid that will conduct
electricity; it does not have to be an acid or a base. Juices of all fruits and vegetables are
electrolytes and almost always acids; hence you can make a battery with peppers, potatoes,
apples, cucumbers, grapes, lemons. (Herbaceous plant belonging to the genus Capsicum, 1998)
These are becoming popular these days as our gadgets or devices are all getting smarter
and versatile tools in our daily lives specially for various types of communications such as calls,
texts, emails and other task, and these devices needs more power for them to work and last for a
day as they should be. Normally the devices that needs a backup power are the smartphones &

tablets these days .And most of us individually owns one. Power Banks are all the rage, they
came in various shapes and sizes. (Power bank, 2014)
They allow you to store electrical energy (deposit it in the bank) and then later use it to
charge up a mobile device (withdraw it from the bank). Power Banks have become increasingly
popular as the battery life of our beloved phones, tablets and portable media players is outrun by
the amount of time we spend using them each day. By keeping a battery backup close by, you can
top-up your devices while far from a wall outlet. The Power Banks we're talking about are good
for almost any USB-charged devices. It may also be known as Power Stations or Battery Banks,
too. (How It Works, 2014)

In California State Science Fair 2014, one of their objectives was to find out which fruit
or fruit/liquid mixture can charge iPhone faster. After failing many times, their objective evolved
into a more specific purpose. This was to figure out if it is possible to charge a phone using fruit
at all. They first list of materials included an apple, a pear, an orange, ginger ale, sprite, a phone
charger and an iPhone. Their attempts to charge the phone with only the fruit and soda were
unsuccessful. A phone did not turn on. However, by triggering a chemical reaction within the
fruit by inserting both the copper wire and the zinc coated nail into the acid already present in the
fruit juice, it is possible to create energy. They was able to create and maintain a stable electric
current which measured at its highest point 14.2 volts. Even at its highest voltage, the fruit
batteries were not capable of powering up a phone.
It is stated that there’s still another organic food that you can see just in your kitchen like
fruits that can produce electricity to recharge an electronic device like cell phone. But

unfortunately, you can’t charge a mobile with fruit itself but with a copper wire and zinc coated
nails.Like the Capsicum annuum that we used to revive dead batteries also needs the lithium ion
that the battery has inside on it. (Improvisation, 2010)
Battery
Lead-acid is the most widely used chemistry for batteries in stationary and hybrid
application, with most having a valveregulated lead-acid (VRLA) design. VRLA batteries are
designed to minimize these effects as much as possible but the operating environment and cell-to-
cell and battery-to-battery manufacturing variations can cause different degradation mechanisms
to dominate capacity loss. It is said that the lead-acid is the most widely used chemistry for
batteries in stationary and hybrid applications. The capacity of the dead VRLA battery studied in
was limited largely by sulfation. It also proves that desulfation can partially reverse capacity loss,
showing a 41% capacity increase in one cell of an aged VRLA battery. Desulfation is the process
of reversing the process of sulfation that occurs to a lead-acid battery over time. (VRLA, 2012)
Battery Testing
During full charge/discharge testing, the battery is discharged from 100% SOC until a
cutoff voltage of 10V is reached. The battery rests for at least 24 hours and is then charged until a
cutoff voltage of 15V is reached. Five rods, threaded to a depth of approximately 0.5 inches into
the top of each cell current collector, enable individual cell voltage measurements during testing.
Holes were drilled into each individual cell and connected to Omega PX309 pressure sensors
using sealed tubes. This work proves that desulfation can partially reverse capacity loss, showing
a 41% capacity increase in one cell of an aged VRLA battery. The results also validate the
diagnosis of sulfation as an important aging mechanism, responsible for at least 25% of the
capacity loss of this cell. The inability to restore the cell to its original capacity indicates that
other aging mechanisms such as corrosion and water loss also contribute to aging. The tests show
diminishing returns after 169 hrs of desulfation.
One of the study used chili extract about 4mL; 2 used batteries (AA size) syringe (1 mL.
per battery); volt meter; nail pusher; pair of surgical gloves, cotton cloth and blender. They
gathered all the materials and information they need for their study. They got the extract by
blending it in the blender and squeezed it in a cloth to get the main extract of the chili. They
recorded every voltage they test with the used of volt meter in every battery they inserted with
chili extract. They found out that it was possible to revive dead batteries using chili extract and
the battery has also as sufficient power to power up single light. (Yingshi, 2012)

Synthesis
Chili is also known Capsicum annuum is more abundant in Southern Northern and
Northern South America. It has different shapes and sizes of chilli such as crescent in shape. Chili
is also both mild and hot ranging from bell peppers to chili peppers. Herbacons plant belonging to
the genus Capsicum that belongs to the family Solanaceae is the most popular food additives that
use all over the world.
Chili is the spicy fruit of plants in the genus Capsicum and member of the nightshade
family Solanaceae. Solonaceae are an economically important family of the flowering plants. In
some country like Pakistan, India, Australia, and South Africa and in other Asian countries, it is
usually known as chili.
Chili peppers have been a part of our human diet since 7500 BCE. According to the
recent research, chili peppers were domesticated in Mexico more than 6000 years ago and were
one of the first self-pollinating crops cultivated in Mexico, Central America. While, the country
with the highest cultivated Capsicum diversity is Peru because it is the centre of diversification
where varieties of all five domesticates were introduced, grown, and consumed in pre-Columbian
times.
Although the plant is not an annual the species name annuum means “annual” from the
Latin word annus that means “year”. Capsicum annuum can also be used in the varieties of
medical purposes because of its pure, dynamic, everlasting, stimulant, purify, can heal stomach
pain and inflammation in the stomach and other pains or disease that chili can heal.
One of the study that we discovered used chili extract about 4ml, 2 dead batteries ( AA
size ), syringe ( ml per battery), volt meter, nail pusher, surgical gloves, cloth and blenders. They
gathered all the needed materials, then they chopped the chili into smaller pieces and put it in a
blender then started blending it. After blending they poured it in a cloth below it is a bowl that
will catch the extract. They squeezed it so the extract will come out. Then they poured it in the
battery using syringe ( ml per battery), they waited for 2 hours so the battery will absorb the
capsicum annuum completely after waiting they tested it in a clock it worked and examined it
using the volt meter wherein the proved that capsicum annuum can revived used batteries.
The word improvised is comes from the Latin word improvise, meaning “unforeseen or
unexpected”. We use improvise for the alternative in any things that we need. It is also the things

anything that they want or that they need.
Power bank is a device that is used to charge our devices. It can store energy or electricity
to charge our gadgets such as phone, tablets and other gadgets that we have. The power bank that
we talk about is good in any USB- charge devices. It is also known as power station or battery
bank.
The improvised power bank is the device that we use to recharge our gadgets but this
improvise power bank is home made. We need improvised power bank if we don’t have money to
buy the real power bank. All you need to do is to gather all the materials to make the improvised

METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the research design, project design, project development, project
development tools, components development and testing procedures.
Research Design
The first comparison of the power bank and our improvised powerbank is obviously the
materials we use to create it. Compared to a normal power bank which has many complicated
parts, we used the basic components needed to create an improvised powerbank, like battery
holder, wire, conductor and connector.
Experimental Method is most appropriate in controlled settings such as laboratories. The design
assumes random assignment of subjects and random assignment to groups. It attempts to explore
cause and affect relationships where causes can be manipulated to produce different kinds of
effects. . Because of the requirement of random assignment, this design can be difficult to execute
in the real world (non-laboratory) setting. Experimental research concerns relationships between
variables.
11
VALENZUELA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Research Instrumentation
The researchers made use of experimental approach in reviving dead batteries using 2
types of Capsicum annuum where in Jalapeno and Paprika served as the independent variable and
the dead battery served as the dependent variable to be observed.
On the other hand, observation through the use of a researcher made rating scale was
utilized to evaluate the improvised power bank in terms of applicability, replicability and re
chargeability.
Ten panellists which are composed of Science teachers of Valenzuela National High
School were randomly selected rate the power bank. A five point Likert scale was used to rate the
product. 5 for Strongly Agree, 4 for Agree, 3 for Uncertain, 2 for Disagree and 1 for Strongly
Disagree were used as basis in rating. Results of the data collected were analyzed and interpreted
by the researcher using appropriate statistical tools.

Analysis
We express our ideas, opinions and suggestion to come up with a righteous study. We
critically think on how we make a study for our project. We also find a lot of information for our
desired project.
Designing
The proponent made a layout for the different materials that we were used like battery
holder, battery with capsicum, wires, etc.
Prototyping
The first battery we conducted our experiment on was a different brand from the ones
that succeeded later on. We tried our best to inject the chili extract into the main component but
alas, the battery was very old which made the part where we needed to inject the capsicum
14
VALENZUELA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
annuum solidify. We gained knowledge of this when he disassembled the battery part by part,
thus moving on to the next battery. The second one was nearly a success if our syringe needle
didn’t clog up because of the part that’s made to absorb the extract. Instead of injecting it, we
decided to leave a few drops of capsicum annuum on the absorbing part of the battery then left it
for a day. We concluded that two hours was enough for the battery to take in the extract without
fail.
Our improvised powerbank prototype still lacked a few components that would support
the capsicum annuum powered battery, such as the connector that will serve as the electricity’s
conductor into any device. Still, we managed to finish the main battery holders and the wires that
will be connected to the conductor. We plan to obtain the usb-like conductor from an old charger
and test the prototype as early as now.
Testing
At our initial experimentation, we had prepared three dead batteries. After extracting the
capsicum annuumm from several types of chili, we injected the first dead battery with red bell
pepper but failed to see the right results to due to the battery being old. The second battery,
injected with jalapeno, was almost a success. We used it in a wall clock and the battery had
enough electricity to power for it for at least an hour. Lastly the third battery, new but dead, was
injected with paprika and tested in another wall clock. The battery lasted for nearly a few days
without fail. At one point we decided to mix all of the capsicum annuum extracts together and
inject it in one battery. We measured its volts by an all-purpose meter and saw that it generated
more volts than the limit of the battery.
Constraints
The researchers did some trial and error method after failing to see the results that we
need to obtain. The main reason of failing is that the researchers had a hard time to find and
collect the fully dead batteries for them to inject the different kinds of Capsicum annuum extracts.
Evaluation
This study was successful much to our relief. Through our trial and error method, we
came up with the conclusion that the Capsicum Annuum or chili extract can indeed revive dead
batteries, more specifically a double A battery. After three samples that resulted into failure, we
managed to gain more knowledge about how we can better the experimentations. By the fourth
time we injected the Capsicum Annuum into a dead battery and waited for two hours for it to
15
VALENZUELA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
fully absorb the extract, we received exceptional results. The Capsicum annuum seemed to have
generated a greater amount on volts prior to the original battery.
• Dead batteries – The sample of which our study revolved in. It was very difficult
to gain dead batteries due to its unavailability.
• Cloth – The means we used to wring out the solvent part of the Capsicum
annuum.
• Syringe – The instrument we used to inject the extract into the battery.
• Surgical Gloves – The safety equipment we used while extracting the solvent part
of the Capsicum annuum.
• Battery Holder – The main component of our improvised power bank which held
the revived batteries in place.
Statistical Analysis
One of the most common statistical analysis, the T-test for two Independent Groups was
employed to determine whether both treatments showed a significant difference from each other.
On the other hand, Mean, one of the measures of central tendencies was utilized to determine the
most effective Capsicum annuum in supplying voltage to the dead battery.

Summary
In this study, the researchers were able generate electricity derived from
Capsicum annuum extract and managed to revive the dead batteries used in this
experiment.
The results that the researchers obtained after performing the tests confirmed
the feasibility of generating electricity and the difference between the two chilli extracts
used in the experiment with regards to its capacity and compatibility. All of the replicated
batteries were injected by the same amount of 2cc of the extract. The first Jalapeno
extract injected into the dead battery’s inner component was able to generate 1.5 volts; on
the other hand the first Paprika injected battery resulted into 1.2 volts. Followed by the
second try, the Jalapeno showed 1.5 volts, while the Paprika resulted into 1 volt. Lastly
by our third try, the Jalapeno generated 1.5 volts and the Paprika 1.1. The result of this
study showed that the battery injected with Jalapeno extract was consistent with
generating the enough amount of electricity that is the same as a brand new battery
