Tutorial Chapter 2 PDF

The document describes two chemical reactions carried out in flow reactors. For the first reaction, achieving 50% conversion would require a PFR volume of 150,000 m3 or a CSTR volume of 50,000 m3. Adding a second CSTR or PFR in series could raise the overall conversion to 80% with volumes of 150,000 m3 and 90,000 m3, respectively. The second reaction provided rate data to calculate reactor volumes needed for 40% conversion and the maximum conversion in a 10.5 dm3 CSTR. Combinations of PFRs and CSTRs in series were also analyzed to achieve 80% conversion.

is to be carried out in a flow reactor for an equimolar feed of A & B. A Levenspiel plot for
this reaction is shown in fig P2-9B.

a) What PFR volume is necessary to achieve 50% conversion? (Ans : 150 000 m3)

b) What CSTR volume is necessary to achieve 50% conversion ( Ans : 50 000 m3)

c) What is the volume of a 2nd CSTR added in series to the 1st CSTR (part b) necessary to
achieve an overall conversion of 80% ( Ans : 150000 m3)

d) What is the volume of a 2nd PFR added in series to the 1st CSTR (part b) to raise the
conversion to 80% (Ans : 90 000 m3)
