UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENTS
PROSPECTUS 2019-2020
1. Candidates should read the prospectus carefully before filling the application form.
2. Applications must be complete in all aspects. Incomplete applications are liable to be rejected
without any intimation.
3. Separate application should be submitted for each programme.
4. Medium of Instruction for M.Phil programme is only English.
5. Foreign nationals including NRIs with valid Passports and Visas issued by the Government of
India and refugees will be considered for admission subject to their eligibility in terms of
schooling and qualifying examinations passed.
6. 15% of the total allotted seats is earmarked on a supernumerary basis for foreign nationals
including NRIs in all the PG programmes.
7. Self attested copies of mark statements of the qualifying examination and entrance mark should
be sent along with the filled in application form.
8. A self – addressed stamped envelope (28 x13 cm) for Rs.10/- shall be attached along with
the filled-in application.
9. The filled in applications should be sent to the respective HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT,
PERIYAR UNIVERSITY, PERIYAR PALKALAI NAGAR, SALEM – 636 011.
10. There will be an Interview conducted by the respective departments which would also intimate
the result to the candidates.
11. No TA/DA will be provided for attending interview.
12. Admission to M.Phil Degree programme is based on the marks obtained in qualifying
examinations entrance examination and Interview as per M.Phil regulations of Periyar
University.
13. The number of seats are limited in the programmes offered by the Departments. Selection is
based on merit and communal roster system of the Govt. of Tamil Nadu.
14. Candidates from other states (except SC/ST) will be considered for selection under the General
Turn only.
15. Candidates who have passed their qualifying examination from other Universities should obtain
the eligibility certificate from Periyar University and submit the same at the time of admission.
To obtain the eligibility certificate, candidates are directed to contact the office of the Registrar.
16. Fees paid will not be refunded if a student leaves the programme after admission.
17. The University is not responsible for any postal delay or loss in transit.
18. The decision of the University is final on all matters related to admission.
19. University decision is final on all matter related to admission.

Community Certificate, Transfer Certificate, Mark Sheets (10th, Higher Secondary, UG, PG

PROFILE
Named after the renowned rationalist of the twentieth century,
Thiru E.V. Ramasamy affectionately called ‘Thanthai Periyar’, Periyar University was established
by the Periyar University Act, 1997 passed by the Tamil Nadu State Legislature. The long-felt need
for a University in this area was thus fulfilled. The University has jurisdiction over four districts,
viz., Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri. Periyar University was established on
Periyar’s birthday-17th September 1997. The University aims at developing knowledge in various
fields to realize the maxim inscribed in the logo “Arival Vilayum Ulagu” (Wisdom Maketh the
World). At present, the University has 27 Departments which comprised of 8 schools, and 1 PG
centre.

Discipline/Ragging
Each student is required to observe discipline and decorous behaviour both inside and outside the
campus and should not indulge in any activity, which will tend to bring down the prestige of the institution.
Ragging is unlawful and will be viewed seriously. The registration of students will be automatically
cancelled if the charges are proved. As per the UGC recommendation, if any incident of ragging comes to
the notice of the authority, the student concerned shall be given a chance to explain and if his explanation is
not found satisfactory, the authorities would expel him from the University.
Attendance
1. Every teaching faculty handling a course is responsible for the attendance of candidates who have
registered for the course.
2. The course teacher must intimate the department at least seven calendar days before the last
working day in the semester about the particulars of all students who have secured an attendance of
less than 75%.
3. A candidate who has an attendance of less than 75% shall not be permitted to sit for the end
semester examination in the course in which the shortage exists.
4. However, it shall be open to the department to grant exemption to a candidate who has failed to
obtain the prescribed 75% attendance for valid reasons on payment of a fine and such exemption
should not under any circumstances be granted for attendance below 65%.
5. The department will announce the names of the students who are not eligible to take the end
semester examination in the various courses. Registration of such students for their course should
be treated as cancelled. If the course is a core course, the candidate should register again and repeat
the course when it is offered next.

1. The filled in Applications should be sent to The Registrar, Periyar University, Salem – 636 011 on
or before the last date specified.
2. All columns must be filled.
3. Put a mark √ in the appropriate box
4. Write your name and address, one character per box in the space provided.
5. Enclose 28 X 13cm self addressed Rs.10/- stamped envelope.
6. Application cost Challan/ DD in favor of The Registrar, Periyar University, Payable at Salem

2. Write the subject name for which admission is sought. Eg. To get admission in Tamil enter the
subject name in the box as:

5. Give address with Pincode to which communication must be sent. Use the boxes starting from first
position.
6. Attested Xerox copy of recently obtained community certificate from Revenue Officer of
Government of Tamil Nadu not lower in rank than Deputy Tahsildar must be enclosed (in the case of
ST/SC/SC (Arunthathiyar)/DNC//MBC/BC/Minority/OC candidates.
7. Give particulars regarding Educational Qualifications. Attested Xerox copy of Higher Secondary,
Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree certificate and also P.G degree statement of marks must be
enclosed.
In the case of candidates who have secured their P.G degree through autonomous colleges of this
University, candidates who have studied under semester pattern and candidates of other Universities,
their attested Xerox copy of P.G degree marks Statement indicating External and Internal
Assessment Marks separately with maximum marks for each paper must be enclosed.
8. (a) Candidates who have passed two years Master’s degree of other Universities after 17 years
of study under 10+2+3+2 or 11+1+3+2 or 11+2+2+2 pattern of study which are already
recognised by this University, alone are eligible for admission for M.Phil Programme.
(b) Write Periyar University office Ref. No. of the Eligibility / Recognition Certificate for the
Qualifying P.G. Degree from other University. This is applicable to the candidate who has
obtained P.G. Degree from other University and who has got Eligibility / Recognition
Certificate from Periyar University. The attested Xerox copy of the
Eligibility/Recognition certificate must be enclosed.
Fees prescribed are subject to revision by the University. The difference between the existing fees
and revised fees if any should be paid by the candidate at a later date as per the directions of the University.
